Are there no land based Air defense units in Civ1?

Combing throughout manuals and code I couldn't find a single Land based unit that is capable to directly defend against air attack units (Bomber(s) for example).
Can anyone confirm that's true?

And if that's true that means that you must have Figter in your city to protect against Bomber, as otherwise the Bomber can inflict damage without being damaged.

P.S. I know that SDI defense can prevent Nuclear attack. But that's not my question.

Wrong. All units can defend against bombers and if the defender wins the virtual dice roll the bomber dies. Only fighters can attack bombers in the air though (that's not entirely true either but it's the 'rules').

Thank you for the clarification... 😀

In what way 'that's not entirely true'? Do you mean fighters can only attack, but not defend? If so, yes, it's logical.

Well combing throughout rules and such I kind of expected that there is some defense against bombers later in the game... 😞

Sometimes the AI can attack your bombers with units other than fighters. It can happen if the bomber is stacked with other land/sea units. Let's say it is a bomber hanging over a rifleman after its first turn. A human player would only be able to attack that square with a fighter, because only fighters can attack bombers in the air, and a fighter will most likely lose the fight. The AI, however, will sometimes just move in and kill the stack with a regular unit, which it shouldn't really be able to do.

Yes, I'm aware about problems with a stack of units. There are all kind of weird cases and misuses...
I guess well have to touch this topic for OpenCiv1 later. But for now I'm stuck with utterly broken original GoTo code to fix 🤔
