Are Wonders of the World, really wonderous?

Since I only have the demo so far, and read the manual a bit, I am disapointed with the Wonders of the World. They seem flat. How are they in game playing terms for people who have the full version of the game?

I know when I played Civ II, and a bit in Civ III, but especially in Call to Power 2, I always loved it when I made a Wonder of the World. I don't see it exciting here.

In Call to Power 2, you got a nice movie to go with it. The benifits were great as well. The benifits were good in Civ IV as well. In the demo of CiV, when I read the civopedia, it dosn't seem so "grand" or exciting.

I love to hear your opnions about it.

They're not as exciting as Civ4, imo. Honestly, I have a habit of wanting them solely for their free maintenance so far.

They are definitely underpowered compared to the old wonders. But they seem balanced for the new rules in Civ5. Overall, missing them makes go "meh", whereas I got into a fit if I miss them in Civ4...

Yeah, this pretty much sums it up. Lets hope one of the inevitable expansions brings back some of the "wonder" to World Wonders.

the thing I like about Wonders in Civ V, you see them being worked on, not just magically popping up.

They don't expire anymore. +8 culture per turn is nice for the entire game.

Some bonuses do expire. For example, The Collosus after anybody researches Navigation.

If you have England in your game, it's probably best to forget about that wonder :(.

Overall, Wonders seem to function as a way to boost your play style. For example, I required Himeji Castle as India, and having Big Ben towards the end of the game as Arabia let me build an extra 3-4 units which won me the game.

The Oracle and The Great Library are amazing.

I like these wonder's effects and being able to see them being constructed but I miss the movies.

I don't miss the movies too much, though I wouldn't mind new ones. But the wonders themselves, while downplayed compared to IV, seem to fit into the world a bit better. Honestly, you could feel the world tip over in IV when wonders were built sometimes.

I wouldn't mind if they made a little more of a splash in V, but I'm glad the race to build them doesn't give me heart palpitations like they did in IV.

heh. me, too. i find myself going "well, i could a unit or a building, but that will cost me. guess i'll just produce this wonder for a while."

honestly I love the wonder paintings

Me too. I never watched the videos, but I always listen to the quotes. And the paintings are gorgeous and fit the art style very well.

Agreed. When I said I wouldn't mind new videos, I was actually kind of thinking of not videos, but more like a slow moving version of their paintings. Because I can't put what I'm thinking into words that well right now, I hesitated to say it, but maybe you know what I'm getting at.

No, for me they don't seem near as exciting to me as they did in IV, although they can serve a purpose though I don't mind nearly as much if I don't bother to build them where as in IV, I would be pretty put out if I missed building the wonders that I wanted to try for.

For me they just seem rather dull and less wonderous than in IV, I was hoping they'd be continuing the tradition of being wonders and exciting but that just didn't happen, at least no yet for me in 5.
