Hi.

I want to ask you people who enjoy civving (which seems to me in some way related to my skin picking needs..).. Do YOU do it? Are you anxious people like me?

Preface.. :

I have this condition/disorder called dermatillomania/CSP (Compulsive Skin Picking).
Read about it more here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dermatillomania
This is my body in a bad state but in high resolution there below the hand...

In general, it comes with anxiety or/and other OCDs or/and in many cases BDD (Body dysmorphic disorder).
For me it fully bloomed since I got my generalized anxiety disorder, a bit after age 24. I'm 32 in a month. I don't think I have real BDD..

Anxiety attacks and depression can be treated using psych pills very effectively (for me at least), but CSP is condisered in "OCD spectrum" and also related to instinct disorders.
Nothing can really be done for OCDers..

Important to note that the "closest" disorder is a much more common one - trichotillomania, which is pulling hair from oneself.
Also, some genetic connections have been proposed between these two to Tourettes. I don't remember where the article was right now..
They did make rats pull their own hair off obsessively.. linkyblinky

Civving is by defenition repetative actions and logic over the same path.. that is why so many times it seems like civ is first decreasing my own obsessiveness then becomes part of the obsession :|

So, are you civvers derma or tricho or niether?
If so, are you ashkenazi jews? (just need to check your DNA connection to me ;) )

You are positive your anxiety has nothing to do with living under the constant threat of rockets and suicide attacks? I am betting OCDers in North America have a decided advantage when it comes to dealing with anxiety.

If you ask, psychiatrists (3!) say the trigger for my anxiety was too much tea (I was on a not-smoking period, and I drank tea every hour on work instead of a cigarette)..

You may be true that being in Israel may raise anxiety, but I think if anything was long lasting to be a past cause, it's some beatings from my dad and the pressure to always go forward full speed... no time!!!!
Logically I'm over that. Otherwise I just don't know if all the dots connect.
Another person could do the same just fine.
2 of my cousins have anxiety in forms, and 1 of them tricho... he has a different dad (I think!)

Actually, yeah, I pick the skin around my thumbs. I used to pick the skin around all my fingers and toes, but now.. I am down to 2 fingers..

I'm proud how far i've come but I need to stop doing this to my thumbs.. ugh.

It's not really stress or anxiety related, I don't think, as far as I am concerned. That's probably how it started - but now I just do it as filler.. I guess.. I don't know, it just happens. Half the time I'm not consciously deciding to do this, it just happens.

I'm not very proud of this, but there ya go.

does it look like the hand picture in my first link? Always wanted to know if that's really it.. and not conciously deciding is exactly it.. the hand just has to go there sometimes, like some "calm" their hair with their fingers or scratch their balls.. ;)

My sister says I always picked, but only occasionally..
Perhaps you got over your anxiety syndrome somehow along life? ;)

Nah, my hand looks nothing like that. I pick right around the fingernails.. I don't really like talking about it, but.. maybe if I talk about it, I'll finally somehow stop doing it altogether. It used to be realllly bad when I was younger.. I've come a long way, but yeah.. I still do it to my thumbs.. which sucks. I wanna stop.

I'm not sure if it's anxiety (I did have some anxiety attacks from time to time, when I was younger. I'm over that now) or what.. No idea what it was.

My mind is usually racing.. it needs something to think about. This leads to me being an insomniac sometimes.. like now! and that's probably why I pick the skin around my fingernails - it acts as filler.. something to occupy my mind with.

I suppose I need to learn how to sit still and get my mind to occupy itself in other ways.

I pluck annoying whisker hair that my electric shaver misses.

I scratch my head which leads to dead skin falling from the top of my head. I also pluck the dirt from underneath my fingernails and when my fingernails are long enough I bite them (especially the ones on my right hand 'cause I can't cut them off using scissors with my left hand).

I seem to be devoid of any sort of nervous ticks. All of my friends it seems are twiddling their thumbs or their leg starts bouncing whenever they sit down. It boggles my mind.

Wow. Israeli's are so used to the rockets, they get more anxiety over tea!

That is HARDCORE

I bite at my knuckles and the webbing between my fingers especially between the middle and ring fingers on the right.

So, what you are all saying... is that you all "have" it in small quantities, like... humans!
But I was really expecting to find some hardcore derma/tricho here. Quite surprised that people can play civ and not mess with themselves obsessively.

Amatures! I think warpus had it started at some time, but got over it.
Good for you that you don't have it.. not much fun :|
