Are you computer-tidy ?

I'm not too bad. When the cover is off the machine, I usually manage to keep my dirty socks out of the cooling fan. I can't use a laptop anymore, because with some of the hilarious things that happen in the SGs I'm in, I tend to spill drinky-poos into the keyboard. Regular keyboards withstand a trip through the dishwasher MUCH better than laptops do.

Oh wait - were you guys talking about the DATA?!?!? That reminds me of something that happened about 10 years ago. I used to meet a group of hacker friends after work at a particular coffee spot once a week. We had something of a reputation... anyway...

One day this guy comes over to our table with a rather... perplexed look on his face. He asked if we're the group that's into computers, and if so, would we please help.

(Remember - this was back in the DOS/Windows 3.1 days, when those who surfed the internet got their phone bill in a box)

Anyway, this guy's got a problem with his computer. We start asking the usual questions ("did you install anything lately?" "run a virus scan?") Finally I ask him if he did anything at all to his machine before it stopped working.

"All I did was organize the hard drive."

After seeking clarification, it turns out that this guy had organized his hard drive in the following manner:

All the .exe files in a \EXE folder.
All the .com files in a \COM folder
All the .bat files in a ...

You get the idea. This guy was WAY too organized with his computer.

My computer is a mess. I have three HDs (161 GB total) divided into a whole bunch of partitions (I don't remember how many), on which I have six OS's (3 Linux distros, FreeBSD, 2 versions of Windows). I have a folder of my documents that is located in five places (On a FAT32 partition, on my Mandrake home directory, on my WinXP partition, on my FreeBSD home partition, and on a backup split across 2 CDs). I also have a folder on my Mandrake home partition that has documents that the other folder doesn't have (which means that if I lose that partition, I can say bye-bye to those documents).

But my desktops are all nice and clean.

edit - and after checking, I realized half of my documents folder is also on my 600MB Windows 3.1 drive. I don't know how it got there.

yeah, i'm pretty good.
only thing is my tendency to hang onto useless utility programs :\

roflol

I have to use SEARCH to FIND anything.
Clients nearly killed me during my last HDD crash/

i figure a computer is like a room, and since i usually keep my room clean, my comp gets the same treatment.

Re-format room.

sort of, when it starts to get messy, i pull out everything, chuck away anything i don't need and reorganise.

Well defragmentations can occur when people sort out all their stuff so that there is some order in how things are stored...

My computer is pretty organized. My Desktop is quite tidy with only a few programs that I use regulary. My Start menu is organized with all my games and utillities in seperate folders. My music is perfectly organized though with all the files named correctly. Mainly because when transfering them to my MP3 player it's easier to have things named logically

Oh yeah. I'm obsessive-compulsive about organizing data on my computer.

Ever since 1998, I've kept all my files in the "My Documents" folder. It started with 100 files, and maybe three folders. I take screenshots of my "My Documents" folder fairly often. I first got this computer on 10/12/2002. I had 154 folders at that time. Now I have 302 folders. I can find almost any old file I want within minutes, no need to search. No need for incredibly long and stupid file names (such as 2002-school1), because I know where everything is.

I usually have some kind of cleaning fever every now and then. Get rid of unwanted files, backup important files, uninstall unneeded programs and games, update drivers, defragment HD.

I think my room has corrupt file system since I can't find any of my stuff...

Considering the amount of data I have on my computer, I'd say it's very efficiently arranged. I almost never have to use search function to find any personal files! :D Every folder on the root directory has a broad category name, then each subfolder has more a precise name, and so on (and I also arrange files to the proper folders).

Hmmm, thats a good idea. It works if you path your pathes. :crazyeye:
(Tell him the next time this: 'deltree c:' and answer with 'j')

I say the genious is the master of the chaos.

Both my desktop and my lap are really well organized.

From Folder structure to the Internet Explorer favorite folder, everything is organized well.

I also do weekly backups of my system harddisk and Civ3-savegames. This is what 250 GB USB-Harddrives are really useful for.

My books are also packaged or arranged well in racks, but everything else is quite a mess, including my car.

Things of importance to me are always cleaned and pretty much kept in order. :)
