While playing my last Balseraph game after building the arena i had an idea.

Why not give a unit that survives a set number of arena battles an Arena Champion (or Gladiator or whatever) promotion.
Im thinking 5 battles, that would mean a ~3% chance of survival if im not wrong. If one unit makes it that far, why not reward it?

I haven't thought much about what the promotion should give to the unit.
Maybe happyness to the city he is in, because he is basically a star and people would be happy to see him (Oh my god! Sven the Slayer is in the City! Yay! I want his autograph!).
And probably some combat bonus, too. Maybe some first strikes or some bonus percent on strength.

Its nothing big and in most games you probably won't see it, but i think its a nice idea.

let me ask you a question. Would YOU risk it? 3% is ridiculously low, and for a small reward at that

I'd pretty much agree with Teutorix there - it's not one that people are going to attempt to gain by fighting a set number of battles against those sorts of odds. There is potential however for a couple of promotions relating to the idea, in a similar way to how units that explore lairs have a change to become adventurer's and become better at exploring lairs. It's not unfeasible that a unit that survives even one battle in the arena may become a popular gladiator, and any battle in which he fights will trigger a period of happiness in the city. The promotion may even increase the chance of him surviving the battle. Eventually though, his luck would run out and he'd be killed, but you may be able to benefit from 20+ turns of happiness in the meantime.

Mechanic
20% chance to gain "Gladiator" promotion per arena fight
Unit with Gladiator promotion has 80% chance to survive arena fights.
When a unit with Gladiator promotion fights in the arena, +5 turns on the event happiness timer.

In theory - if you need some happiness in the city - all you need to do is throw a load of warriors into the arena - eventually someone will impress the crowd...

As Balseraph you send mostly freaks into the arena that you don't need anyway, atleast i do that. So i thought it had to be a low chance, so that it is just a nice side effect and not something you actually go for.
But after reading it again 3% seems too low.
Vehems idea sound nice, and i remember reading that magister cultuum has done something similar in his modmod for the cave of ancestors, where there is a verly low chance that one of your mages can become the next caswallan.

Wait, the arena does something? I don't think I've ever bothered to build one. I never need the happiness enough to warrant the cost of the building.

What about needing Swordsmen or Mimics enough to warrant the cost of the building?

Really, I can't see how a 20 nature mana Yvain could possibly lose in the arena. It should be based on your unit's power.

I send freaks into the arena all the time especially if they don't have the mutations I like.

Usually I'll run them in until they either die or have so much exp that I have to use them.

There are 3 possible career paths for a freak.

1. It has great promotions you cannot get by normal means. It will one day (with lots of reloadin I am sure) become an über immortal.
2. It has nothing special but I already used hammers for it. If it survives the first arena battle, it is added to a garrison in some city.
3. It has something nasty I cannot get rid off. It is dumped into the arena as many times as it takes to get rid of it.

It would be nice if the Weak promotion could be removed by fighting in the arena.

Or even automatically at a certain xp level
