I.O.T Century.

It's been ages.

Is the community dead? Or does anyone have any plans to launch an IOT?

Dead and buried, and yet, it is frequently unearthed via this thread.

It would appear many folks' physical bodies are unable to stay, but their minds are unwilling to leave.

If nothing else, I lament that the collaborative GM model never really took off; having to manage a team of 200+ people these days, I can DEFINITELY see the value of that approach now lmao

(I affectionately refer to myself and my two assistants as "The Troika")

IOT, the subforum is dead, however, the world-spirit that animates and drives on IOT will live on in the halls of the Second Trump administration. And is this not what we have always wanted.

200 people?! Doing what?! :c5production:

As for the troika, please tell me you use that phrase in such company. Personally that would be most of the joy I got out of it, even if I got weird looks. Just throw an arm around them and go “eh, soratnik?”

1. We raise absurd amounts of money for trans people while also doing a crazy music festival.
2. Yes, yes I do. We were the "Triumvirate" but I decided Troika was better.

So, is anybody actually interested in reviving IOT?

I think you would be hard-pressed to find an audience. The heyday of IOT correlates with a time most of us were high school or college students, and I don't think a new generation really exists.

This is without mentioning any intracommunity drama that has erupted elsewhere that would make it even harder to consolidate around a single game.

That I can understand. And forums like CFC in general have seen better days (though one might hope the current controversey around social media might present some sort of opportunity). Still, there are a few people poking around here evidently.

I'm not really privy to this.

A canary in the mine is normally a warning sign; in 2019, IOT was already being gnawed by the worms and birds. We can see a testament in the fact we actually got BirdJaguar to get involved in what is a forum backwater

Somebody wanders into this subforum every year asking the same question and the answer is always the same: IOT did nothing that wasn't being done better somewhere else by 2016. Everybody interested in the Hiterlism side of things found a new home in Paradox Interactive games or the OT board here. Everybody interested in the roleplay side of things moved on to TTRPGs or a different board (Shared Worlds on AH.com is very good, I recommend you check it out).

Makes sense, though it feels like everything on CFC besides OT and a few General/Strategy/Mod boards is dead at this point.

Gaming is certainly alive and well yeah, just on different media. My roommate and my boyfriend each have their own weekly Discord-based DnD sessions for example. Some people still play Diplomacy by mail.

There is just the fact most IOTs ultimately did not provide anything that you could not obtain elsewhere (for example, there was a tendency to copy Paradox mechanics into spreadsheets rather than playing Paradox games). And if they did, there was the steady disintegration of the community as people got older and there really wasn't that many new people to keep it going. A consequence of everyone getting older is that many new social connections form as well; if you want to scratch that gaming itch, well... you're likely to do it with new social circles, not old ones.

I sometimes feel the old GM itch. I miss some of the player to player interaction to be had with custom states and wacky rulesets that probably aren't 100% beta-tested. But the nostalgia quickly gives way to how much work it was, how little spare time I have now versus then, and frankly that my social circle has radically changed. If I organize anything, it would have a much higher ROI to try and host with the newer circle than attempt to revive an old one dating to March of 2010 that, to be frank, was a product of its time rather than born of genuine compatibility.*

*Me finding one of my first crushes in this space aside
