Army or Wonder?

Cheiftess did a good job of laying out the pros and cons (aside from the military academy).

For me, a lot depends on the situation on my starting continent. I intend to take over my continent, you see, and the # of neighbors I have will greatly effect how much fighting that will take. If I have 2 neighbors... well, that 1 leader may be all for a long time. Therefore, it is likely he will provide me with a FP (or a palace move once the FP is complete near my original capitol). If I have lots of neighbors, I know I'm in for a long fight, and I also probably won't have an optimal spot for a FP or palace move for a while. Therefore I will most likely make an army, build the HE, and hope it pays off. Last game it did (9 leaders: army, FP, Sun Tzu, Sistine, Leo, Magellan, Newton, army).

Usually I don't build armys, only there is nothing to build, like wonders, FP, Palace, ...

But I think the Heroic Epos would help to get one or two leaders more.

Why bother with armies after the Modern Ages? Don't they become obselete and limit the capabilites of MAs and all?

Well, at the modern age the armies could be very helpfully.

But at this age I don't have so much experiences, but if you are in war at this time, the likelihood to get a leader is higher then in other ages (you have more fights), and you can use one to build an army and then the other small wonders.

When you see an elite Mech in a 28 size city you do like to have armies....

Yes, putting MAs into Armies has limitations (loss of individual unit blitz), but the sheer power of a 4 MA Army is awesome.

There are other late-game applications, including 4 unit MI Armies on defense, and "modernizing"older Armies by adding, say, one MA to a 3 Tank Army. Again, that limits the individual MA, put the mixed unit Army as a whole becomes VERY powerful.
