Ashoka (Dhammaraja), World Renouncer / World Conqueror - Leader Discussion

They look very different.

Edit: and I think the one on the left looks "later," but the hats look Achaemenid as well.
Edit 2: I wonder why one of them has 4 accompanying units, the other has 2 and the Indian one in the Ashoka FL has 0. Do they come with upgrades?
The unit figure mixes that they showed in the artist panel are not the same ones we see in game. Part of the reason is probably because they are randomized.

It could be called Safavid and still have some Qajar architecture, just like current Persia is chiefly Achaemenid but has Sassanian elements like the commander.
And a Parthian lamassu if we are going by that screenshot. I'm okay with slightly-blobby Persia as long as we get three full eras. It's not like China and India are getting necessarily better treatment, the Han are building the Great wall despite having generally less to do with it than Qin or Ming dynasties (they did build some of it, but are not renowned for starting it nor extensively rebuilding/renovating it. although I guess they did what was, at the time, the longest section).

Ugh I want his drip but purple never looks good on me.

Between Shawnee being pre-order DLC (correct?), and the new Ashoka being DLC, I’m kind of confused why optional DLC features are being marketed before base game elements?

Maybe I’m missing something or confused?

My running hypothesis is that there is so much civ/leader content planned that they simply can. The flood will come in sooner or later and a single Ashoka or Missisippian civ isn't going to compare much in size to the full game. But we need a few more weeks to see if they keep building momentum with these (potential) threats of multiple civ reveals per week.

Following from my original critique of his design for the World Renouncer design, I don't intend to look into and nitpick the details here, but off the cuff it's nice to see him wearing what looks like a dhoti.
Compared to the stitched pants of the vanilla design. However, at the same time the sword is still obviously far removed from the Mauryan time and place.

By the way, is anyone else piqued by how the orange Ashoka has a purple banner, while the purple Ashoka has an orange banner?

Just me?

okay then...

Confirms what I was hoping was the case: Colors are tied to leaders, not civilizations.

I'm crossing my fingers that we've finally ditched Gandhi...but even if we have I wouldn't be surprised to see him crop up in DLC (just like Civ6 Alex).
Oh he'll be back, which I'm fine with on the condition that they ditch the awful meme persona.

Civ1's Gandhi didn't even HAVE a pro-nuclear bias due to overflow (debunked by Sid Meier himself!!) so this entire meme is dumb and pointless, and everyone involved in attempting to make it a thing should try to respect themselves instead. :)

I'm resigned to it going to happen rather than wanting it to happen.

At least in the meantime we have some Ashokas.

I will brag a little about my civ6's Ashoka mod which I also based on the popular duality of Ashoka's reign.

Well, I drew it in 2018, long before first persona was released (I believe?). Obviously due to lack of skill I haven't made a 3d model, just a 2d texture.
However it allowed me to be more artistically free to represent a duality. I simply decided to "split it in half".

An ability in similar manner, ("Conquest by Dharma"): +1 Combat Strength per 15 combats that involved your units. After 108th combat this bonus is replaced with: Eurekas and Inspirations boost both current Scientific research and Cultural progress instead specific Technology or Civic.

What is more, I made a dual text lines (before and after reaching 108 combats) and super simple agenda: dislikes everyone before 108th combat, likes everyone after that.

I wanted to share, because it was one of my favourite creations and it is cool to see the same concept in-game.

I suppose I should have guessed that Ashoka would have had two personas. For some reason, I completely ignored his full title of "Ashoka, World Renouncer" in-game while all the other leaders had their regular names without titles. And it fits, too, seeing his historical character. Unfortunately, the World Conquerer persona is locked behind the Founders' Edition DLC, and while I do think I'll be getting Deluxe on release, Founder's is just a bit much, so I suppose I'll have to wait to get Ashoka's alternate persona.

Oh no he's HOT.

I'm actually impressed at how much your design kind of foretold the Civ VII design, not just the duality but his general attire.

I may have read this in Squidward's voice.

Well there goes my enthusiasm. Sneaky of Firaxis to hide that in the small print at the start of the video.

It's on the Ashoka guide, not the video.

It‘s also in the video.

More interesting regarding small print and video (but off topic to this thread) is that the Nintendo video announcing Meiji and Himiko also stated that the footage shows DLC content, and I‘m not sure whether that content was actually identified.

Ah, I didn't catch it under the title block at the beginning.

I still haven't figured out where it is on the Himiko video. I just rewatched it again and the three small print segments are about camera angles, multiplayer, and Trademarks.
