Not sure if the ask a threads are still allowed, but this could be potentially usefull.

I have been using 3d design programs for 7 years. Mostly i use Bryce 6.1, but i am somewhat able to model in 3dsmax too.

You can ask any questions about 3d design, how it works, how long it should take one to familiarize with the 3d world etc.

Although i used Blender a few times i got to admit i gave up on learning it, since it has a very steep learning curve, to the point where it got to be frustrating. Bryce, on the other hand, is very user-friendly, although it is a bit limited as a program. 3Dsmax is somewhere between the two, and probably the best modeller i have ever used (but i still model in Bryce 6 since that has the best texturing and lighting abilities i have found up to now)

Do you do any 3D modeling besides making Civ3 city sets?

If 3D movies take off, is there a way to rename 3d designing so as not to get them confused?

I have not seen a movie in 3d yet, so cannot be sure. But 3d design (3d graphics) cannot really be called anything else since that is exactly what they are.
Not sure if 3d movies are 3d or pseudo-3d though.

Yes, i have modeled work for Age of Wonders II, For the Glory (EUII title) and Civ II.

But i only model for games, at least up to now :)
Was this contracted work from the designer or was it mod work?

Always mod work, which is why i am an amateur ;)

I had once been contacted by a company for making gfx for them, and also once again for a freeware, but declined since i do this as a hobby and have not interest in a career in it.

To get an idea of what i do, here is a part of my latest work:

(edit)

These are obviously miniatures, although they were made in full 3d. However it is important that their size is not much larger than this, so that i avoid to have to model in more detail, something which saves a lot of time.
Generally only when modding for a full 3d game one needs to have more delicate textures, and usually then instead of modelled parts there are intricate textures and uv-mapping, which substitute the detail without making slower computers lag too much when playing the game.
However Bryce is notorious for producing a lot of polygons for things other modellers (eg 3dsmax) produce only one third of. My models are mostly around 15K polygons in Bryce, with the larger ones being anything up to half a million polygons (such as the Hagia Sophia, or some Khmer buildings i modelled).

Ask about Blender! I use that thing.

Not sure if I would be considered in this slot since all I do is pose ragdolls and props in Gmod. :-/

A small sample of what I do in Gmod:

Top left's Frozen, right?

Yes, I'll be trying to do a troll but I'm not very familiar with using blobs in Blender so I'll be asking soon enough.
