I decided to see what kind of stereotypes and questions people have about North Carolinians (or Southerners in general) as well as Americans. Fell free to answer as well if you live in one of the aforementioned areas.

How do you feel about South Carolina?

I don't think of South Carolina much. However, I get the feeling that it has had less of a tobacco and furniture industry in the past, and does not have two rapidly growing metropolitan areas now. I do not hate them if that's what you're asking.

Is stfoskey Black? Soul food is an African-american term from the 60's, referring to collard greens, black-eyed peas, ham hocks, sweet potato pie and and other foods that were popular in poor, southern black communities (yet "good for the soul" -ie., filling). Seldom heard today except in dated movies and old restaurants.

I am North Carolinian and can say Tar-Heel, and that I have no idea what soul food is.

One might even go as far as to say that "not knowing" is a contemporary American characteristic.

Weeell, when you get into watching cooking shows that's pretty much what anybody means when they're talking about either black or southern cooking. Hell, Paula Dean built an entire culinary empire on soul food.

How can you live in the south and not know what soul food is?? Have either of you lived in NC your entire life, or did you move there within the last 10 years?

Do you consider Kentucky to be part of the South?

No one calls it soul food anymore? The words I normally here when people talk about southern cuisine is "Southern fried". Although now that you mention all those commercials with black women trying to sell some old-fashioned southern food do manage to slip soul somewhere in there. Also fast-food is king down here.

And I have lived in NC my whole life.

I think of it as "might-as-well-be-South" since it doesn't really come off as Midwestern.(And they gave us bluegrass)

I more or less agree with Cynovolans. I moved to North Carolina a few weeks after I was born. Also, the question about soul food was why it is called that, not what it is.
