Asoka is a man?

I know, I was surprised, too.

He is.

The third ruler of Mauri dinasty which consolidated India through series of wars. And in reality he was very brutal and ruthless ruler. Apparently, after the masacre of a whole tribe numbering 100 000 by his army, he was disguised by the rivers of blood and the mountains of dead bodies, so he adopted budhism and since then he ruled sophisticated and peacefully.

Ironically, few decades later, his country was destroyed by brutal and ruthless neighbors, who came in power after the Mauri put the weapons aside.

It never occurred to me that he could be seen as a woman (and I don't recall any posts talking about him as one, so it doesn't seem to be a common mistake), but I guess that the name ending in an -a and the haircut could lead someone up the wrong path. The Civilopedia text and the in-game diplomacy texts make it quite clear that he's male though.

I think the op was refering to the fact that his in game picture makes him look pretty effeminate or girlish if you will.

That's what I thought (the OP meant, I mean...I never thought Asoka was female).

I have seen a number of threads where his gender was in question.

Nah, nevermind. I'll just get myself in trouble...

I'd vote for Asoka and Sury to be "other" or "undetermined". Asoka, you're sure he's human, but aren't sure about his gender. Sury, you're not even sure he's human. If he is, you aren't sure about his gender, either.

Maybe Asoka in the game in a transsexual. I'd known a couple of them, and it was hard to tell.

I must have a different Asoka model in my game as he's clearly got very masculine features. Or are people seriously just looking at it as long hair = woman?

He may be a man, but he dosnt have one:groucho:.......... like the other Indian leader.

I personally think Asoka was the better leader. But shut up CHEESE!
