Hmm... I've been saying the DLCs didn't have enough content to justify the price, so I wouldn't be opposed to that.

Did the Goths ever have any prominent naval history though? Other than them the lineup has a very maritime theme...

Yeah this is what makes me doubt them all going together. It breaks up an otherwise clean theme... It would give 2 per era otherwise though which makes far more sense as a structure... :confused:
 
The Goths weren’t just pure landlocked warriors as they actually ran a bunch of sea raids across the Black Sea. They definitely had some maritime skills.

Cool. I asked because it definitely is a blind spot in my knowledge of history. If they fit then I would stop pressing X to doubt immediately

When I first came across them in history books, they struck me as the Vikings of the Black Sea, raiding the Greek and Anatolian coasts. And there is plenty of evidence that they weren't scared of naval warfare (see Battle of Sena Gallica). That said, I'm no expert on the subject either :-)

If you really want to bend the Goths that way, they are/were linked to the Geats of southern Sweden and the island of Gotland is named after them. So, they could conceivably be your Antiquity vikings. The Goths in the Varangian Guards were also alleged to engage in ritual dances that bore similarities to berserkers.
 
I remember Firaxis saying they had a 2nd historian on the books with expertise in Northern Europe?

Since there are 5, and the Pirates are the weird one of the bunch. Maybe Tonga, Iceland, Ottomans, Maori as the pack with Pirates as a free gift?
I was wondering this too along with 3 leaders, when there is usually two. Edward Teach and Pirates would make sense to be released alongside together as an extra one.

Splitting Tonga and Maori between the packs as incentive for Oceania fans to buy both. It should be 2 Antiquity, 2 Exploration, and 2 Modern civs total to keep things balanced.

And just because we have datamined some of the contents, doesn't mean we have seen all of them.

But I could totally see Pirates shipped with Ottomans similar to the Persia and Macedon pack for Civ 6. If you want the Ottomans/Persia, you need to get Pirates/Macedon too.

If you're so adamant, although I think the Aztecs' general technology doesn't really match the general 'vibe' of the Exploration era.
Perhaps they could make it work by making them an 'early-Exploration' heavy Civ.

The Goths, back before they got divided into Ostro- and Visi-, had moved south across modern Belorussia and Ukraine to the Black Sea coast and their first sea-borne raids on Roman territory are recorded in 253 and 256 CE. By that latter date they had also seized the Crimea and Bosporus, which allowed them to raid the coasts and coastal cities pretty regularly. Among other places, they sacked Byzantium around 266 CE, and later broke into the Aegean and sacked Corinth, Athens, Olympia, Argos and Sparta. They made the mistake of staying on land long enough for the Roman Imperial army to intercept them and got smashed, but they were still raiding in the Black Sea and up the Danube River several years later.

The Germanic group with the best-attested 'naval' attribute was probably the Vandals, who were already established in central Europe when they enter the historical record, so have less of an attachment to Scandinavia (although their name has been attached to a root word wand, meaning 'water' and related to origins near the Limfjord in Denmark, but that's speculative linguistics, not history or even archeology)

But after they established a kingdom in North Africa (which included Romanized Carthage and Hippio Regius, so an obvious Carthage to Vandal progression) they raided the western Mediterranean under their king Gensereic so thoroughly that the Old English word for the Mediterranean was Wendelsae - "Sea of the Vandals". This also led them to sack Rome in 455 CE, which gave us the modern noun 'Vandal' with its negative meaning, but both historical and archeological evidence indicates that very little actual destruction ocured, just systematic looting. Later, Vandal fleets soundly defeated both western and eastern Roman fleets at the Battle of Cape Bon in 468 CE, capturing most of the former and destroying the latter - with fire ships, which would make an interesting Unique indeed.
 
I suspect there will be 6 and one just wasn't in the game files. I'd guess it's Goths or one of the other ones we have an Antiquity wonder for already.
That would result in 15 civs per era, a nice round number. It could perhaps mark the end of the DLC cycle, leading us finally to the first expansion. The Aztecs, Edo Japan, Byzantines, and other popular requests wouldn’t be released as DLCs, since they might be reserved for the expansion to make it more commercially appealing.

I also think the Goths are a strong candidate for this pirate pack, as they could perhaps serve as the historical predecessor of Iceland (I think Rome and Greece would feel out of place).

I think Aztecs could work in Exploration as a “Religious” civ. Spread religion/getting units through sacrifice (similar to Assyria and Codexes)

I think it works better than fine. The Cuauhocelotl being placed in the Ancient Era in Civ VI may imply otherwise, but the advantage of the Spanish's advanced metalworking and gunpowder wasn't exactly comparable to 30 points of Combat Strength; Cortés didn't need to rally an entire coalition of disgruntled tributaries just for translation work. Looking at most of the techs and civics in the Exploration Age, I see gunpowder, metalworking, metallurgy... and then everything else is (from a cursory glance) stuff the Aztecs did. Besides, the precedent already seems to be that regardless of "general technology," if you were the region's primary power when Spain showed up, you're in. Why would the Aztecs need to be set back chronologically any more than the Inca? Moreover, if not the Aztecs, who would represent Mesoamerica in Exploration? Going back in time is hardly going to get you closer to your "general technology" quota, and going forward would mean a New World that comes pre-colonized (please step back behind the curtain, Republic of Pirates, it's not your cue yet). All in all, I don't see why the Aztecs and the Spanish shouldn't be contemporaries, nor why the subject of one of the most famous conflicts of European colonialism doesn't fit the "vibe" of the game's Colonial-I-Mean-Exploration Age.

Yes, that did blank from my mind, it does make perfect sense for them to be contemporaries with the Spanish given the history. I suppose I thought it would be weird for Aztecs to be colonists but you know that's how the freedom of the game turns out.

And they also wouldn’t need to be colonists (although they could) the Military and Economic Legacies could also have different bonuses for them.
Maybe they could “sacrifice” a conquered settlement …ie give it back with less population for a “Treasure Convoy” or military points.
Or get repeated bonuses to Temples for conquests (different way to get Science Legacy)
 
I agree with Eagle Pursuit that the leaked Civs, IF not revised will be divided in at least two packs.

That said, I disagree that Tonga / Maori / Cooper would be split up. They very clearly belong together, and would sell better if kept together due to the overarching theme.

As such I don't really believe everything else relates to a giant piracy theme. The Ottomans have had Barbary Corsairs in the past as their UU, but it doesn't fit if they're Modern. What I think is more likely is that either Sayyida al-Hurra or Ed Teach (or both) have some sort of corsair naval UU that is available in every age and passively upgrades, just like how a regular naval unit would.

Iceland definitely does NOT fit the idea of a raider Civ. A naval Civ? maybe. But a Civ centered around piracy? Ehh.

The line-up hinted at by the asset files definitely feels incomplete, regardless. Like we're missing a leader and possibly a few more Civs.
 
10 gold per turn says that Edward Teach & Pirate Republic is a non-player, neutral, exploration only faction a la other 4X neutral pirate factions. Probably taking the 'bonus' slot like the natural & world wonders in the next collection.
man I hope you are right. fully fleshed out crisis with a leader, units and abilities. maybe we could then get Attila and the Huns as an Antiquity crisis. And since you mention other 4X, an event chain a la Great Khan from Stellaris would be so cool in civ. (you get to either join the Khan when he comes knocking or try to form a coalition to face him)
