Attacking an island

How am i supposed to take control of a city if its on an 1x1 island tile?

You have to wait until you get Amphibious troops (Marines,
Or Berserks if you are playing the Vikings)

Note that by occupying an island with troops on all tiles makes you place safe from invasion, and can be a pain in the ass for someone that tries a conquest.

You could also get the city in a peace negotiation. You can't attack an empty city from the sea without berserks or marines, IIRC.

IIRC, you need marines/berserks even if the city is empty.

If the city was empty could'nt you land a paratrooper in it?

Declare war on the civ, take some of their other cities. When you declare peace, get the civ to give you their island city.

Dunno, have to try that sometime...perhaps they can be useful....

It's a problem though, when all of the civ's cities are one-tile islands. How're you going to take any without amphibious units?

In one mod I once started I added a "Raider" unit (1.1.1, amphibious, expensive) that upgraded to Berserker or to Marine (can't recall)... It's a bit of a design flaw that one-tile islands are impenetrable fortresses (most of the time).
But I guess you can always just play smart and make sure to negotiate peace and get all the island towns before continuing your conquest. ^^

Sometimes, I lay siege to a one horse town like this and take it last. I do this partly to avoid the AI striking out with a settler and me missing it and partly to stop other AI civs sneaking in and getting the last city of a nation when I have done all the work of demolishing the other cities.

Hmm.. you can drop a paratrooper on an enemy city. I did it accidentally. It said the mission failed or something. Trooper dead. Maybe if the city were empty, though...

Just pay attention to the one tile cities once the map has been uncovered and make sure it isn't the last city you take. Get it in a settlement for peace and then take the last city with your tanks parked outside.

I never research for mariines and I only have Civ3 v1.29, no vikings.

Nope, it tried it (for experimental purpuses), and it didn't work. Paratrooper, sadly, can't land in cities or on units, only on unoccuptied (excluding yours) squares.
