"Attacko's -What is "Strategy"

Life Imitates Civ4
I suggest the Russians won because while thier people were unhappy and they were pumping men towards the western flank- their cities were empty with a red burning icon like a beacon of disaster for the enemy.

Uh…did they leave Stalingrad empty?

Or just the 1 population cities on the arctic sea, presumably built for naval attacks?

I suggest in civ terms they loaded up and fortified in Stalingrad, possibly giving the troops city garrison and drill promotions as the battle went on.

Not to mention using un-automated workers to build :hammers: tiles (workshops, great synergy with state property,) micromanaging city builds into :hammers: multiplier buildings and airports, and using the whip cycle, which is enhanced by the Kremlin.

Pretty sure Germany was too busy threatening too many foreign cities at once to deal with this.

But I’m probably reading the code wrong or something.

Attached is a photo...
Spoiler :

th_sadhitler.jpg

This is an actor playing Hitler after Stalingrad. He is portrayed as sad. Too much offense can lead to madness, defeat and suicide.

Yeah Hannibal was so busy making threats he forgot to take Rome when he could. If he did a little more attacking and a little less threatening, probably could of won. Was probably having too much fun drinking in the pillaged vineyards or something.

As for the Romans playing it too cautious or defensive…pretty sure that worked out for them. Prime example of the school of “don’t always shoot” actually working.

It was more that the Romans would not come out to fight, from behind their walls, they were just to scared," hanable's gunna get you" was the threat to children for centries if they misbehaved. Frustratingly haniball had little to do except pillage, the Romans had just lost an army, because they had no tatics, 80 odd thousand mob (sod) charge as one big mob, hanibal stands centre, long line, a red flag to the bull, and "slowly" withdraws his centre, flanking the romans , now the numbers are equall, the middle of the mob, is useless, more died trampled by other romans, AFTER this they learnt tactics. AT carthage when charged by elephants the simply form colloums at the last minite , the phants just go through and are picked off at the back, Before hannaball they didn't have this organisation, they only had brute force, but they learned quickly

I can't tell how many are being sarcastic on here, but it does hurt a bit having real-life battles and tragedies dumbed down to Civ terms IF the speaker is being serious...

Yeah it reasonably can be seen as incredibly disrespectful. Very dark humor. Sorry if I offended you or made your (or anybody else’s) day worse.

The Hedgehog Defense

"In warfare, the hedgehog defence is a military tactic for defending against a mobile armoured attack, or blitzkrieg."
"The defenders deploy in depth in heavily fortified positions suitable for all-around defence"- Holypedia

in chess

" the Hedgehog is a pawn formation adopted usually by Black that can arise from several openings."
......- "'hedgehog' was a generic term for any setup that was cramped, defensive and difficult to attack"
... -It is also possible for White to adopt a Hedgehog setup, but this happens more rarely. However, this did occur in Fischer - Andersson, Siegen 1970, one of the first games to feature this method of development. Fischer's crushing victory in this game.....- Holypedia

and now back to life

A notable example of modern hedgehog defence is the Battle of Vukovar during Croatian War of independence,
in which an exiguous and ill-armed but determined Croatian resistance kept a larger, heavily equipped -- but without the will to fight -- Yugoslav army at hold; buying precious time for the fledgling Republic of Croatia to organize their own armed forces.
- Holypedia

and now to Civ4 -
You may find yourself boxed in - or in a cramped position
because of enemy borders. The following post will go into this but it really only applies if you are one of those types that fights till the end - all 4 of you. You see, in multiplayer, even if it fails and at its worst- if you hold on as long as you can and put up a spirited defense it can change the outcome of the whole game, which seems like it would be important since playing the game is the point

now back to life - A hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceine and the order Erinaceomorpha. -Holypedia

this is a hedgehog, small with spines. It beat the great invention of "blitzkrieg" everyone likes to think was some hyper modern new warfare thing that smart nazi's came up with.

The Hedgehog Defense Part 2

sometimes in multiplayer someone is about who is gaining points and regardless of the circumstances (lack of metal or horse or both- out teched, out manned, out built)
i tend to attack.

On more then one occassion someone will see an opportunity and will join in - lose
and then make peace? (sometimes i think to myself, you want to live to see last place? thanks for now having the full force aimed at me- but then another part kicks in and i go into the "the glorious bowmen will fight til the end against the Keshik hordes")

"Croatian resistance kept a larger, heavily equipped -- but without the will to fight -- Yugoslav army at hold; buying precious time for the fledgling Republic of Croatia to organize their own armed forces"

In single player you can make fortified positions the enemy may attack, in multiplayer
they will know to just go around them- there are tactics to both and at times they
overlap.

i take a simple approach in regard to this- anything spiny like a hedgehog is good for the hedgehog defense.

Forests, Tundra Forests, and Forts (they have spikes on the tower part)
Jungle has spiny toads and spiny caterpillars.

Many know to counter amphibeous landings or to hinder them - fill the coastline with units- a wall of units also ensures that the enemy has to attack at least one of them- and the others can collect and fall back to a new defensive point.

The Hedgehog Defense Part 3

In multiplayer you see the enemy units approaching, catapults, horse, sword, and there is no way you will hold that city- you still have a couple of options

Retreat and prepare the next city, try to stall- (implying you can built enough reinforcements) or vacate and counter attack

Wait til the last round of the catapult assault if you can- vacate all the troops out- onto a fortified spot make for the enemy border- oft times the invading stack will have to stop its invasion to repel this- buying time
(side note - if the enemy does not raze the captured city and holds it on its march- have at least two galleys always on hand for a sneak recapture- )

On a two tile isle a fort on the exposed tile forces either attack on the main city- or attack on the fort-which gives them no defense bonus and allows city counterattack.

there is written some advice on the use of roads enabling the defender first attack but keep in mind that a human player snips roads as soon as they can and even the artificial intelligence manages to pull it off- in the hedgehog defense #%%#$ roads.

In the images below is a vacated city about to fall and a remainder of a defensive point- but in civ there is a twist- while holding out in various areas while you may bleed someone- better- you can counter attack to retake or invade- note the "defenders" includes a secret triple move unit that niether the artificial intelligence nor a human will take into account. (also free upgrade)

That would have been the worst YouTube video I've ever seen if I hadn't already seen "wut wut in the butt".

Theres a slight problem with hedgehog defense, namely rolling up in a ball of spikes in front of a car, *sometimes* you might get a flat tire attack, mostly you just get squished.

If an opponent hedghogs, wouldn't you start pillaging resources ?

But awsome thread dude, lots of great advice, probably alot of it falls on ears deaf to the random fun of online strategy gaming.

but theres one bone I must pick, and thats quitters...no one made them play with you or suggested they even have to, so maybe just approach the idea from a vien similar to one you have already suggested. You annoyed the enemy so much with little stabby stab attacks, under the guise your back-at-base (which they cant see, coz your fighting on their borders) madly teching a unstoppable lead.

Kinda like in Dawn of War when you realise theres a couple of squads of fire dragon melting your base and your army is out protecting strategic points.

In those cases, a rage quit would be understandable, and cmon, you *still won* yeah? even if you didnt get to trample down every last women and child fleeing to the hills.

So why hate the quitters? A teacher doesnt usually set a test they know the class has no hope of completing, especially if they want the class to turn up next lesson.

"looks like a genuine ancient video document to me"

I found one that was colorized. "Civ 4 Attacko's Amphibeous Elephant Assault"
think dumbo's mom was in it when she was in her teens.

Walt Disney just getting started.

and thanks for the replies.

Apparently Walt Disney's contributions to the world of heavy metal, while little-known, were fundamental.

"Apparently Walt Disney's contributions to the world of heavy metal, while little-known, were fundamental"

It was in the late forties and fifties and anti communism was at its height.

Walt asked Attacko to make an anti-communist propaganda film and Attacko thought he said cottage builder something or other

a tactic when facing overwhelming odds-

Cut and Paste

When the Atomic age started people thought of things in particles.

Psychological science was around the same time- another perspective

and the Renessaince and age of reason or whatever it was

The point? I suggest we are in the "Cut and Paste" era of reasoning.
In gaming, and in all else. Modern strategy should reflect this as well.

Hybrid. The strategies should combine everything- avoid ommision and selection, avoid taking and adding to- The screenhot is Sistuil's Strategy Guide and Ultraman and the pixels and color etc.- by cutting you destroy the original if you copy it is still around.

It saves time and instead of painting a landscape you can cut and paste one.
Research? the same, make it fit or - precedent as law.

Manuever and Depolyment- The Snakes Head

This refers to the capital, usually your main city- an earlier thread mentioned it -
its either coiled to strike- or in strike mode.
However it also has to do with mobility, placement and replacement of your troops.
More on this later.

Cut and Paste cont

"people are not interested in your search, they are interested in what you find"
or something like that from Picasso

Which is all fine and well but since people aren't paying my rent or playing my game i suggest it doesn't matter what they are interested in - unless i want to take their money or to manipulate in which case its real important

at any rate- Cut and Paste- Destroy - Erase.

As an american facist this new way of thinking enables one to alter the enemies culture ,
change it, and eventually destroy it.

In its place you can put your culture and cities and buildings.

Actual culture becomes a perception, then a memory, then i think you sell it to someone.
Trade thier horse, reduce the population with slavery, or raze, anything to up your culture
and money.

Notice that diplomacy, buildings , wonders- simply elements to the cause- and the cause is production -
the end is dominance and refutation of death and defeat (losing)

since the idea originated with civ4 (the model? what is a model- a thing you build and see if it works? ) i'll post this- "Attacko's Cut and Paste - Destroy Erase, -21st century thinking of modern man"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93G-398NMzA&feature=channel- you tube

me and my brother melted plastic models and used firecrackers and they were more fun when they blew up then they were just sitting there to look at. I think cottage builders would rather look at them but we all like to look at people models.

i have found that the evidence is clear and this is the superior- and an attacko vid.
