...can lead to a very pissed off player.

I've been playing Civ I through III on Chieftain for about 12 years. I found out the hard way that the current GOTM (set on Monarch) is not to be taken lightly. I tried all that I know, and got my @$$ kicked via Conquest Defeat. I never got more than 4 cities. Methinks I need to start lighter, such as going to Warlord level. But I am unable to win there, either. I feel like such an idiot for not knowing how to beat Warlord. I mean, come on! Chieftain bores the cr@p out of me, and I end up not finishing out of a lack of interest. Can I please have some tips on how to move out of my Chieftain rut? :(

Build one or two workers for every city. Do not automate them - have them build mines, irrigate and roads. Get out of despotism. Trade with the AIs. Seriously you should read the war academy, and read up on the succession games.
