Barb clans mode: Raid camp, gold go KA-CHING! Kill the barbs that spawn, XP go KA-CHING! Repeat. Get you 4-6 warriors with a lot of promotions, upgrade to Legions. If you could get a couple catapults in on the action and get them to the +1 range promotion early...."Really powerful" is stretching it a lot.
Its an ok bonus, nothing more.
If you use catapults to farm barbarians for the +1 promotion, it means that you invested far too heavily into something that will never really repay itself.Barb clans mode: Raid camp, gold go KA-CHING! It's not broken, but it's gonna be a lot of fun.... (on Epic or Marathon, if you can still raid a camp every 10 turns, it'll be absolutely broken.)
Because the advantage of +1 Range isn't just "moah power!!1!". That +1 Range lets you keep your catapults out of the range of the walls, so you just need to keep troops away and you don't ever need to take damage to your catapults, which is a force multiplier. Barbs are a fairly easy and risk free way of doing that because no walls.Think of it this way - why spend time farming barbarians camps with catapults for XP, when you could use those catapults to take cities, and gain just as much (if not more) XP by doing that at the same time?
I tried it. Nice idea, but catapults come too late for it to be worthwhile. Rome needs to be going to war as soon as the Legions are ready to roll, and the catapults are better off going with them than hanging back grinding barbs.Because the advantage of +1 Range isn't just "moah power!!1!". I tried it. Pretty powerful, but it has to be managed more carefully than I thought. (I used the extra cash to buy too many units, and there weren't enough barbs to grind them on.)At best, this ability lets your warrior (who is the type of unit that should farm a camp repeatedly) gain a little more XP on the side while doing that particular job.
Yes I know perfectly well how strong +1 range is.Because the advantage of +1 Range isn't just "moah power!!1!". IIRC with Barb clans, the 300 gold cash bonus doesn't work (at least when I tried it yesterday). I'd be happy to be proven wrong on this, though.Barb clans mode: Raid camp, gold go KA-CHING!

That 300 bonus cash though is super handy early game in standard barb mode.
As far at the extra XP goes, the most benefit is for your early game warriors and archers, and even your scouts (as they take out the barb scouts).
Okay, I started a few games with Jules. The XP farming isn't as good as I thought. I struggled to get a 2nd promotion on my warriors before it was time to upgrade to legions and go to war. The gold is pretty sick if you're playin barb clans mode, though.Point is, this XP is a nice addition (to the gold) for farming barbs, but should never be the main reason that you go out there and farm them.
Feel free to do so if that's what you wanna do though, that's fine as well and it's not like its gonna ruin your game if you choose to do it.
Ah, it's when you raid the camps. OK that makes more sense. It was working for me. It was even showing up in the tooltip when you went to raid, it was telling me that I would get 335 from the clan, and that was really powering a lot of my early economy. It's kind of crazy the amount of money it gives - settlers only cost like 500 gold at that stage of the game, if you have 2 camps nearby you get basically a free settler every 10 turns.
