[NFP] August Update Video Thread

I really wonder how eurekas and inspirations will work in the new mode. Do you still get them? I’m whether I’ve ever triggered the future era eurekas, given most take a spy and someone ahead of you.

I bet eureka/inspiration requirements are the same. I also assume the shuffle only applies within the same era.

Now I am thinking of those leaf techs that some players don't even research.

I am really liking the randomized tech and civics tree idea.

Now the Explore of the 4x's can be applied too not only exploring the map but also your science and civics.

Anything that has me playing and adapting to the game world around me rather than a predesigned path is a big plus in my eyes.

Bring on the random civ, random tech/civic tree games.

One thing I would also like is a victory condition randomizer. So it randomly chooses three of the victory conditions and only has these on. Will be fun to roll the zulu for example in a game with no domination victory and just be forced to adapt

The shuffle mode does seem interesting. Imagine not able to find Political Philosophy or Industrialization early enough.

In this screenshot you need Record History to unlock Pol. Phil.

I guess I'm in the minority with the Tech & Civic Shuffle Mode. It's the first thing since NFP that I'm not particularly interested in.

They didn't mention a specific date, but I suppose we can assume the update will go live this Thursday.

August 27th

And in this screenshot you get Industrialization very early right after Printing. (But if you are unlucky you may need to unlock everything Renaissance to even see Industrialization)

i would assume they are banded to their respective eras

From the video it looked the same. The wheel still required you to mine a resource for the eureka. All the techs and civics stayed in the same era just randomized although it looked like Code of Laws was still the first civic.

Yes they are but they can shuffle the early and late tech. For example Steam Power can be an early Industrialization Era tech.

I wonder if an Eureka will reveal where it's tech is on the tech tree

It does seem like if you get the eureka then the position of the tech is revealed to you. So eurekas are more important in this mode.

Also it's mentioned that costs are randomized (2:01). I wonder what that means.

Edit: this Writing tech, is costing more than 80 science. The screenshot (1:58) is showing 4 science per turn. So if it was costing 80 science then 80 * 0.6 = 48 which will cost only 12 turns.

The shuffle mode and natural wonder picker are both great additions. Personally I will probably not use them much beyond a few initial test-case games, but they're definitely the sort of thing that's a good quality-of-life/giving-more-options sort of addition.

While we're on the subject, I'd like to get a civ-picker, so certain civs don't randomly get picked as well. I'm sure there are mods for this, but it'd be nice to have it officially. (I'm tired of Wilhelmina spawning 666 tiles away and complaining that I don't trade with her, or Kongo same w/spreading religion). Also, a city-state picker, so I can make sure Auckland always shows up!

I assume the randomized costs are bound to the min/max of the normal cost of a tech/civic of that era in an unshuffled game. I don't think they'd actually fully randomize it and have something silly like printing cost 10k science meanwhile future tech costs 5!

Randomised techs and civics is a cool and simple spin on the game.

I wonder if a mode to select which random civs can appear will follow the natural wonders list? I know that’s a feature some (although not I) have wanted for a while.

Looking forward to the patch notes to see the meat of the balance changes.

Costs are dictated by which "column" the tech or civic is in the era. That's all it means. So if Writing moves from the second column of the ancient era to the third column, it will cost 80 science instead of 50.

I'm not sure that I would the tech/civic shuffle mode (though I do like the idea of it) but I think I will be using the Natural Wonder Picker to get rid of Patiti (and maybe the Bermuda Triangle)

Thats a cool detail, If you want to beeline a certain tech you beter gun for the eureka first...it seems more organic that way. I'm really hoping this mode helps in smoothing out the pacing between each era.
