Actually if you want to be pedantic, it's multi-generational transmission, because if you reproduce and all your younglings die, it just ends up the same as not reproducing at all.

They go hand in hand, if you can't survive, you're not going to reproduce.
Sure, sometimes, but, in nature, over many generations, the ones who don't survive, reproduce less.
Genetic fitness (survival) leads to reproduction, not the other way around.
 
There is no such thing as "good" or "best" genes, only genes well-adapted for specific circumstances, and even that is complicated by epigenetics in ways we don't understand.
 
I would say being able to adapt and survive is the only objective definition of having the best genes.
