The more you read about Autism the more you don't know about the condition ;) Trust me...I've read A LOT! There are so many theories that it can boggle the mind. Some think its the wheat in the diet, others think mercury poisoning (mercury being the main "preservative" in immunizations), while others are convinced its genetics and those are just a few of the more popular theories!

As I sit here now I can rule ALL of those theories.....

My second oldest son is Autistic, he was FINALLY diagnosed at the age of 3 (I'd been pushing for an answer since he was about 20 months of age, buts that another story). He didn't show signs of autism until just after his 18 month immunizations, so we were in the "Mercury poisoning Camp" until....

My daughter, who is now 6, was diagnosed with autism (higher functioning than my son but still in the "moderate" range) We held off on her immunizations until it was time for her to start school (4 years old), but even then she was showing signs of autism...so there goes the Mercury Poisoning theory...

The wheat theory....this never quite made sense to me, but there are kids out there who have responded amazingly to having wheat removed from their diet...my two did not respond to this "cure".

The last "big" theory, genetics...okay you might think it would be possible in my family, since I have two children with autism.....well I have 3 other children (1 older than my son, and the other two between my son and daughter) that have never shown ANY signs at all of autism!
My older older brother exhibited some austism likes signs that greatly concerned my parents when he was little. Most are not an issue whatsoever anymore--he stopped eating wheat. My little brother also has a wheat allergy, and when it was a really bad allergy when he was little (he's mostly grown out of it) it made him... emotionally very very wrong. While it sucks that you can't just remove wheat from your children's diet and have them functioning a lot better, a wheat free diet also sucks. Go figure.

Like myself, he also has lyme disease. My lyme specialist was explaining that a colleague of his was trying this out with great success.

While I certainly concede you will know far far more about autism, I know too much about lyme disease having had it my entire life (though only diagnosed almost exactly one year ago--experience and education since that year has taught me enourmous amounts of things about this utmost rediculous disease that seems to cause just about every symptom you don't want it to.

I would like to add that mercury is in far more than vaccinations so even if its not the cause, thats not the only way to rule out the possibility.

Genetics works in a way that not all your children get passed on the same active traits, so once again, thats still a possible cause (speaking in a broad sense).

I personally suspect that there's autism, and then there's a bunch of things that can cause people to essentially be austistic but from varrying, probably unrelated causes.

@MSTK and Vietcong. We should start a Justin club. There's three of us in this thread alone.

I wasn't trying to imply that Lyme disease couldn't be a cause, at this point in research of Autism, IMHO, anything could be IT and anything could be a contributing factor. There just isn't enough "knowns" about the condition.

I would like to add that mercury is in far more than vaccinations so even if its not the cause, thats not the only way to rule out the possibility.

I guess I should have said "for example, mercury being the main "preservative" in immunizations." You are correct that mercury is in far more than vaccinations....it is in contaminated fish, dental fillings, broken fluorescent light bulbs, canned tuna, Water treatment chemicals, Drinking water, Fabric softeners, Processed foods....and the list goes on and on and on. The fact that the US Food and Drug Administration is looking into how much mercury is in products, and the fact that they are changing how vaccines are now being preserved should clue you into the fact that there is WAY too much mercury in vaccines...in fact they have stopped making mercury the preservative in vaccines (though some vaccines sent out of country still contain mercury, I have no clue why we've stopped giving it to our children but we don't mind sending it to children abroad :crazyeye: ).

Genetics works in a way that not all your children get passed on the same active traits, so once again, thats still a possible cause (speaking in a broad sense).

Also true. But the fact that my children are the FIRST ever in my OR my husbands family to be diagnosed again leads me to believe that genetics isn't "IT", yet again it could be a contributing factor....

I personally suspect that there's autism, and then there's a bunch of things that can cause people to essentially be austistic but from varrying, probably unrelated causes.

Again the whole "cause" or "contributing factor" thing. As I said earlier....the more you read on Autism the more you don't know! Ask 10 doctor's what they think and I can bet you'll get about 8 different theories! While some people will respond to, say a wheat free diet, other's will not. There's still too many "unknowns". So, until then, we keep "trying" different things. Maybe, someday, we will know for sure...until then keep the theories coming :)

To be clear I don't mean to be arguing with you over causes saying your guesses are wrong or anything rediculous like that. I would say you have the right attitude, trying to solve the problem while being open to the influences out there :)
