Automated Worker Question

Do automated workers give you a good balance between farms and trading posts?

I would like to use them but I'm afraid of them building too many farms and not enough trading posts therefore screwing me out of much needed gold.

Also, are automated workers customizable? Such as, tell worker to build 2 trading posts per 1 farm and 1 mine.

Loving the game so far, but I have only scratched the surface.

Worker automation is not very good, and there is no way to customize it.

I have also seen automated workers building a railroad to a city-state that requested it (as a city state mission). Problem is that said city state was 10 tiles away from my nearest city and I really didn't care to pay the huge upkeep for that railroad. Even if I immediately started to remove the road after the mission was completed it would have been cheaper to just give the gold to the city state directly for same influence.
