Automated workers?

Another reason I don't automate (or trade network too many) is that once they're on their own I'll never find them again! lol

What i do (and is the easiest way) go to the unit section, highlight the "workers" and when they are flashing on your map just choose one then select the "cancel automation button" while holding "ALT" thats will stop em all from what they are doing and you can get em back again with no prob. :crazyeye:

I have a couple of questions about workers.

1) The forts that they put on resources, do they serve any purpose at all? Even though they're outside the city radius are they still available for trading with the AI?

2) Is it worthwhile roading every tile as you improve them during the early game? I think this is a habit I've inherited from Civ3, and am wondering what the general concensus is here.

  1. Yes, they do. They make the resource available to your civ and for trading. But if the resource is inside a city's fat cross, it will need the proper improvement in order to provide its full benefits to that particular city.
  2. Not necessarily. In the early game you typically have very few workers and many tiles that need to be improved, so worker turns are precious. Unlike previous versions of Civ, roads do not add commerce to a tile. They only enhance mobility and provide access to resources. If a resource tile is next to a river, that may provide the needed connection, so a road could be skipped. Cottages and non-resource tile farms don't require roads right away, if ever. If roads aren't needed immediately, you should wait until later in the game when you have more workers and/or they have idle turns.
