In recent games I have gained unconditional trust in my governors and workers.

It used to be that I would make each and every move that the workers made. After winning a game by domination I discovered how much better it is to leave the workers in the AI control. Now, I always set my workers to "A" immediately after being built just after building my second city. The only time I will take a worker out of automation is to build a colony somewhere or if I have to transport them to another continent or island.

And I use the "A" command, not the one that says don't change existing improvements, nor the one that says improve current city. I find the current city option a waste of the workers time. Once the city is improved the worker will be idle indefinately - coming out only to build a railroad later on, or if any pollution occurs. Its much better to let them go wherever they want. This way, new cities will be improved much more quickly than if they had to rely on their own home built workers. I also usually have three or four cities that product more pollution than any others. Leaving the workers free allows them to knock out the pollution more quickly than if I had to rely on just the one or two assigned to the city.

It may also benefit me that I am almost constantly building workers. If I have cities that are maxed out before Aqueducts or Hospitals, and have no more room for settlers, I will keep building Workers.

About the governers, I will leave happiness in their control. Especially when at war during a democracy. Rather than going to every city - every turn - I just let the governor handle it.

On the flip-side, I also have to keep my governors from building wonders in all cities. One time I built a knight, then neglected to notice that the governor chose to build the Forbidden palace there. After a few turns I noticed it, had no wonders to change it to, so had to waste most of them by changing to a library or something. The city was only a few squares away from my capital so it was pointless to have the Forbidden Palace there.

If you right click the cities and do a contact governor, you can set the options to never build wonders, large or small to yes. This will keep them from building wonders. You can also tick the box at the bottom so this is the default for all new cities.

Good thing you caught it when you did. It's bad enough you had to waste all those shields but imagine seeing the screen pop up saying 'We have finished the FP in _____'!

Now that would be aggravating!
