AZ-03: The Peacemonger

Got it. OK, i hafta play quick because I'm probably not going to get much time later though I'd have liked more commentary on any potential religious change. We are currently Buddhist which is the religion of Mali. Mehmed is Christian (and holds the founding city) and the Germany is Jewish (but is not the founder). America, Arabia, China, and Zulu are all Hindu. If one of those 4 founds Islam then we get another in the mix. One path is to eventually go Hindu (not sure that we can yet) so that we have the religion bonus to call on religious allies for help. If we go anything else we stand the chance of being dog piled - in which case this will likely change to an always war game. So basically I'm ok with Buddhist at this point - but am hoping one of the Hindu folks sends a missionary our way soon. St. Pete's is such a nice producer it seems a shame to pull citizens off the fields for lab work.

High priority for me right now is that I feel blind. I wanna see the map! I very much want to know what those odd islands are to the SW - inland islands on a pangea map!?!?! Cool. I wanna found a resort town down there and get a couple of jet skis, maybe a pontoon boat with a grill and a cooler.

Parting words...
Our cities are tiny compared to what they could be - we have civil service now so we can spread irrigation - careful not to build a cottage in a place which may be needed to spread irrigation in future turns. I've got one worker over by St. Pete's building a farm in a non-workable tile to bring irrigation to a workable tile. We literally can grow almost every city by at least 5.

We've got some new civics which we may need to consider. Caste System, Bureacracy, Hereditary Rule. Personally, we're in the red and I don't know that we can afford any of these right now. We need markets and courthouses to support our armies. I've been trading the lowest techs when I could get decent cash so I could at least run 60%.

Almost everyone hates us - this is a problem. We have Christianity now but that doesn't help. We're not in bad shape militarily and we may get a chance to spread peace soon. We only have 2 OBs. Work on keeping those two happy - we're not on track for a diplo win as we stand.

THERE IS A SCIENTIST IN MOSCOW
The next person can lightbulb Paper (recommended) or build an academy.

The save: Peter_the_Peacemonger_AD-0780.CivWarlordsSave

Nice turns.

Paper is a relatively low beaker tech. I'd prefer to research that the old fashioned way, then lightbulb a portion of Education.

With LBs and jumbos we should be safe from aggression. Mansa has Philosophy but no one else does so we could go for the Liberalism race. Do we do it or not?

I suppose we could go No State and get some OBs, at least the trade routes bring some income. That would also allow a bit of scouting around.

I'll get markets up and start running merchant specialists once the cities grow.

No value in runing pacifism without a religion. If we're sticking with buddhism then it's probably worthbuilding a monastery in St Pete and start missioning our cities. Pacifism is more compatible with specialist economy of course. Once we've gotmarkets built we can start allocating merchants.

If we've got a spare GS for education then we have a reasonable chance of liberalism.

Good thing about Monestary = bonus science. Bad thing about Missionaries = wasting a bunch of turns adding a religion to every city and then changing religions (which will pay off in the end-game after Free Religion and in the short game but isn't ideal if we have to change).

In an ideal world, Hinduism would spread to our lands and we could switch to that!!! It is hard to believe that over half the world is Hindu and yet not a single one of our citizens sees the value. Vedanta! Ayurveda! Yoga! for cryin' out loud! C'mon people!!

Sorry about not getting in here to post a skip guys. I thought I had already said to skip me if I hadn't played Monday night but I guess I said I would post a skip. Work has had me going this week and I've been too tired to even drop in here to check on things.

Looks like we are progressing nicely. I tend to agree with staying Buddhist. We're getting nice and cozy with Mansa which might help us with trading techs. We may as well get some benefit in Moscow from Pacifism vs. no benefit at all.

Looks like Hamburg is swinging our way. Biz got the Pyramids as expected. Might be a nice war trophy if he were to get frisky.

I noticed we haven't picked up Lit. Any chance of grabbing that right after MW and then continuing on to Machinery and Engineering? Lit's only 2 turns at the moment. Everybody has it except us and Biz it seems. Since we missed out on marble, the GL might be tough to get. I suspect Washington has a head start and probably has marble. Still, St. Pete might be able to pull it off, if we could spare it for a bit. Having GL there would certainly help to put the pressure on Hamburg and Munich.

Now that Bureaucracy is available, do we want to reconsider the possibility of moving the capital to Rostov or wait and see where war starts first? Sounds like Washington might be a problem soon. If so, Rostov would be a good site for reducing maintenance in captured American cities.

I'll try to check in a little more the rest of the week. If it gets back to me before the end of the week though, I might have to take another skip.

@Luv - no worries on the skip - I got the impression that might happen from your prior post.

Good point on the coziness with Mansa! That could work in our favor if we stay Buddhist. I think St. Pete has built its basic items so trying for GL there might not be a bad idea - though I think the others have had Lit for quite a while. It would just turn into $$ for us which isn't a bad way to go either. Still, that might be better spent building a Monastery and Missionaries to spread Buddhism to our other major cities.

Time to do some serious computation. I calculate the distances to palace now and if we were to move the palace to Rostov. Right now we pay 14 gpt for distance maintenance, and by my estimation the move to Rostov will cost an extra 6 gpt. However, if we switch to Bureaucracy, build markets, and run 30% or more commerce then we will easily break even and even make a tidy profit from the palace swap.

Turn 0: A bunch of chariots are disbanded to save on upkeep. Rostov is set to build Palace as detailed above, due in 15. Moscow is configured to run specialists. The rest are configured for maximum growth because I want to set up a SE. Research set to 80% since we can run a couple of turnsets worth of deficit research. I will decide whether to try and beat MM to Liberalism a little later on.

To facilitate a SE, I make a civics switch:

I can't remember ever running this particular combo before.

Turn 1: We're now running -8 gpt at 80%, things look a lot better now. With five merchants in Moscow we get a Great Merchant in 13 turns - that means a net profit of about 85 gpt when you factor in the profit from the merchant mission.

IBT: We are the second largest civ. Washington wants Civil Service. I'm not stupid, if he wants to attack he can do it without macemen.

Turn 2: Whew, no "we have too much on our hands" from Wishy-Washy. I knew he'd wimp out. Research set to Paper, we will likely miss out on GLibrary and the money is not needed once we pop a Great Merchant. Let's just get the free tech straight from Liberalism without any detours.

IBT: Qin wants Philosophy and we get another enemy.

Turn 3: Washington becomes Confused. We are now Pleased with Mansa and Annoyed with everyone else.

Turns 4-5: zzz

IBT: Wash wants Civil Service AGAIN.

Turn 6: This time Georgie Boy meant business as he has gone all "we have too much on our hands". I send a bunch of units to the west to help defend when he invades.

Turn 7: Paper is in and I choose Machinery next so as to get macemen against Washington. Mansa has no Paper so we will easily win the Liberalism race with our spare GS.

IBT: Washington cancels the gems-for-silk deal.

Turn 8: We're breaking even at 80% research, Machinery due in 5. I think it's better to save our money for unit upgrades now. Turn all those axemen into macemen and when Washington attacks he will be pulverized.

IBT: Mansa asks us to break deals with Shaka and I agree.

Turns 9-10: zzz

IBT: We lose OB from Qin. Mansa is now our only friend.

I played an extra turn to round things up. Moscow will pop a Great Merchant next turn. Washington has about 150% of our power, so if he attacks now he will get creamed. :D

Nice economy management Azaris!! Sounds like we're settling into our pacifism. I probably would have rejected Mansa's request to cancel with Shaka since Shaka was our only other friend and we'd only lose -1 off Mansa. Oh well, we should check other relationships. We could probably stand an assault from Washington but not if he is friendly with all the other Hindus and brings them into any alliance.

We should be considering our victory conditions at this point. At our current religion we're going to hafta go the way of space race and not diplo. I don't know how much longer we can keep our current annoyed status with the Hindus before we lose the option to go diplo. In that case - we need to consider getting the U.N. as a priority. We also need to look for opportunies to foul the relations between the others - getting them to cancel deals (tho not likely going to be an option for us - if it becomes available for even a turn, we should take it). Though not Mansa - we probably don't want everyone to hate him too.

On the other hand, building up relations by gifting techs / resources / lux may help??

That canceled deal from Washington is ominous indeed.

Looks like Space coz we ain't got many friends.

Got it.

We're not really geared up for war. Nice to see LBs being built.

Bit confused about the SE thing. SE means either running multiple specialists or whipping and regrowing. Moscow is the only city currently running multiple specs. We're likely to hit war very soon.

My thoughts would be another civics switch. HR for happy; vassalage for unit xp (and free units to offset losing bureau) and slavery to whip out an army quickly.

Axes are likely to die quick vs LBs; phants will hopefully have more success but I'd reckon to build a decent stack of cats before going on the offensive. Maces are also good but need more hammers/pop.

The only trade mission we can run is into Mali. Fair enough.

Actually, Great Merchants can explore rival territory so go nuts with him. Once we get Machinery we can start to gear for war, but I'd be wary of building a huge army and having it sit on the border - it could be dozens of turns before Washington declares if he declares, and meanwhile our economy goes straight back into the can.

Let's keep our GM out of Washington's territory - it would be a shame to lose him. I'd say let's not use him to explore too much but just get him to a distant large city and get our axes upgraded.

Played 10 turns.

We have an interesting situation.

We can either finish machinery in one turn and upgrade some lvl2 axes to maces or we can complete education in one turn, switch to liberalism and wait for the GS to pop in Moscow in four turns who will then lightbulb a large hunk of liberalism for us. If however we complete machinery then the next GS lightbulbs optics and we have to research liberalism the long way (probably doable coz no-one else has paper yet).

If we were at peace it would be an easy decision. But we aren't. GW has (unsurprisingly) declared on us in 1090ad (Rogue State  , kill! kill! kill!).
He's attacking our new capital Rostov with a stack of 1 ele, 1 cat and 3HA. Rostov is defended by LB(CG1), 2 ele, 1 spear, 2 axes and a cat so should hold comfortably. We've switched to vassalage, Rostov gets a CG2 LB in two turns. GW has a couple of single unit pillagers but no other stacks in sight (yet).

Here's the 1100ad save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/90414/Peter_the_Peacemonger_AD-1100.CivWarlordsSave

Here's The Log:
Spoiler :
1010. GM is born. Heads north to Mali.
Switch Moscow to max scientist production(starvation!) to pop a GS for liberalism. To lightbulb liberalism we need compass but not machinery for optics. Stop machinery research with one turn to go. Switch to compass (four turns).
Moscow's borders have grown to pinch iron, send a couple of workers there. rest of workers head towards Rostov to turn jungles into cottages.
Switch from LB to cats with one turn to go.

1020. Palace in Rostov. Capital moves. Start aqueduct.

1030. GW offers silk for gems. Agreed.

1040 zzz

1050. Compass>Education. Burn GS on lightbulb. Down to five turns.
GM arrives in Timbuktu (siz 11), trade mission nets 1100gold.
Swop cats to cash with one turn to go (unit stacking).

1060 zzz

1070 zzz

1080 Rostov build aqueduct, starts LB.

1090. GW declares war on us.
Revolt to HR, Vassalage (one turn).
Put units back on build queue.

1100. Cat/HAcombo pillages gem mine nrRostov; ele kills cat. HA left.
There's an american axe se of St Pete (ele nearby).

I say go for Liberalism. The sooner we can switch to Free Religion the better IMHO. Watch out for the backstab - as in, don't clear out the rear.

Just tried something in my current solo game. I had a religion that no one else had, everyone was annoyed with me. I swapped to Free Religion and now everyone who was annoyed was cautious and everyone who was cautious is now pleased. So... there is hope for diplomacy!

I say go for Liberalism. The sooner we can switch to Free Religion the better IMHO.

:nono: We are pacifists, not free-religionists.

Washington's power rating indicates he has at least one massive stack of HAs or jumbos yet to arrive. I'm not sure I'd like to risk having to face it without macemen. If you think we can live for 4 turns without Machinery, then lets pump out axemen in the meantime and later upgrade them into macemen. It costs money but is faster since we're not in Slavery.

Good call on Vassalage, it provides nice synergy with Pacifism.

Note that Mehmed owns the Temple of Artemis. Great Merchant missions get +100% profit from the ToA, so it probably would have been worthwhile scouting around Ottoman territory to find it.

I still don't know whether LuvToBuild is available to play or not (What does "end of the week" mean? Please be more precise, people.) so Kodii could grab the save in the mean time and if LuvToBuild returns before the end of this round he can play the last slot.

THE ROSTER:

azaris
pigswill (just played)
Kodii (UP for 10 turns of knocking out Washington's wooden teeth)
Oddible (on deck)
