Version: Beyond the Sword 3.13
Mods: NO
Leader: Ragnar (Vikings)
Difficulty: Monarch
Map: Archipelago
Size: Standard
Era: Ancient
Speed: Normal
World wrap: Cylindrical
Opposition: Willem van Oranje (Dutch), Louis XIV (French), Joao II (Portugal), Isabella (Spain), Elizabeth (England), Frederick (Germany)

Special rules:

  • No vassal states
Variant rules:

  • Must win by domination (all victory conditions enabled).
  • All cities we control must be coastal (captured inland cities must be razed).
  • Once Chemistry + Astronomy are in, at least 50% of all sea units must be Privateers. This rule goes out of effect after Combustion.
  • All turnset reports must be run through the talk-like-a-pirate translator (http://www.talklikeapirateday.com/translate/.
Arrr, this is a succession game for all those who hate land lubbers. The order o' business is big na'ies, lots o' pri'ateers, and subjugatin' the other colonies. Standard 24/48 rules in effect.

Could be fun and a good way to get me into succession games if I'm allowed in.

Monarch player, though I'll probably need guidance post-renaissance as my game tends to unfocus by then.

Sounds interesting. I'll join.

Quick questions:
Will this be a tiny island archipelago, or a standard one?
Do water tiles count towards domination, or just land ones?
How do we transition into the privateer rule, simply build no other water units until we get our 50%?
The pirate translator seems buggy.

Ahoy, me will join Aye, but me would like at least one o' the others games t' finish first. ruddy dan quayle arrr...

Domination is by land area. About privateers, we'll turn our cities to pump them out when we get them. Shouldn't take too long to fill the quota. Then we keep pumping them out as fast as the AIs keep sinking them.

EDIT: @tycoonist: Yarr, Dan Quayle the landlubber walked ye olde planke today.

Arrr, it does seem t' be workin' now matey Aye.

Ahoy, me also suggest we change leaders from that landlubbin Lizzy t' our 'ikin' hero, Ragnar. We would trade philosophical for aggressi'e, tradin' posts, and a better fit with the pirate theme. Ye'll ne'er get me buried booty!

I was stewing the same idea for a while... if there is space for one more player, put me in....

And our favourite horned viking should be in ;)
EDIT:

I'd like to join but i guess rolo is to fast and he beat me to it. :( Anyway i agree. Where is Ragnar and Carthage? IMO any civ with water based uu/ub should be in.

What kind of early game are we after?

Lately I've been using a Metal Casting slingshot with Theo bulbing enabled by the Oracle GProphet. It nets you Christianity circa 5th Century BC and gets you level 3 units out of the gate with barracks and Theo.

Sinergies: The Metal Casting slingshot requires Pottery, which we'll also prioritize for those lurvely english cottages.

Elizabeth being Financial screams for Colossus after that, but as we're going Astronomy ASAP the benefits in the long run aren't that great.

Great lighthouse might be a good call, though I always seem to get beat to this one in Monarch.

So my vote would be for exploration, cranking out Triremes and Galleys to explore/colonize or meet our victims (I mean neighbours).

Any other ideas?

I know there's a fair many gambits that call for delaying masonry to get unusually good bulbing options out of the 1st great person, but for this variant, I don't know if it'll be worth giving up the great lighthouse.

On the other hand, getting theology early would also let us get the Sistine Chapel for effortless 3rd ring border expansions with the extra 5 culture from state religion buildings. Depending on the lay of the land, that may or may not be important for grabbing inland resources.

Arrr, alright, we be Ragnar o' the 'ikin's. I chose Tropical climate t' simulate the Caribbean. Looks like thar's nothin' better than settle in place. Aye.

3 Hills (2N1W looks a forested hill to me), 1 Pigs, 1 Corn, 1 Clams, 1 Floodplain, 1 lake and 11 forests in the BFC with a coastal access? Yup. Settle it is I guess.

Ragnar starts with Fishing and Hunting IIRC. Fishing boat whilst researching either Mining/BW (for chops) or wheel/AH/pottery looks fine. 2nd build would depend on what the unveiled coast tile reveals. If there's another sea resource we might put a second workboat. Otherwise a warrior or warrior (partial)->worker (depending on city size).

Founded Nidaros in place. Work boat was rushed in 10. Our scout disco'ard a site with three gold hills before bein' eaten by panthers. We grabbed Minin' and Bw. Xtianity and Confu war founded. Me re'olted t' Sla'ery. Copper is right next t' Nidaros (handy).

"rawk, rawk, booty and rum, booty and rum"

shut up cursed bird or i'll make you walker the plank, i will.

Ahoy, me think that we should build the great Lighthouse... and with that cooper in hand the Collosus is a must as well Gar, Where can I find a bottle o'rum? :p

Thars gold in them hills!

It seems we be on our own island. I suggest we build a work boat or two to do some exploring when we can afford to. It's hard to say how best to put down cities without seeing where our seafood is.

It would be worth it to sent a work boat or two out to scout early, we might get the circumnavigation bonus.
