Aztec/Mexican Units Pack

This is the collaboration site for an upcoming unit pack that will replace most of the game's normal units with Aztec-specific variants, as requested by Steam user @Crusader_Jeffory.

The next few posts describe artwork I've found either here or on Steam, which show the unit replacements we can readily add to the mod pack. These units are "starting places" that we can modify/repaint as desired. I can't really change the shape of the units, but I can replace the colors and numbers, etc.

The units below represent possibilities of models to use for each unit type. For the most part, I plan on using the legendary @danrell's models (those are the ones with a blue background in the picture). The alternates are provided for ideas, and possible substitutions - if not for Danrell's units, then for some other unit type. Unfortunately, Danrell's units only carry us through the Medieveal Era. Which leads me to my next topic:

Ancient Units: See Post #15 for a closer look at the current versions of these units


Archer: Tequihua. Will use if there is a civ-specific name we can find for this unit type (like the game uses `Jaguar` in place of `Warrior.` Also, any UU special abilities would go here as well.

Add: moves through Jungle tiles further.





Chariot Archer/Melee: Kototsietyuki. I'm not sure if this will be archer or melee - will have to check the art definitions. The model currently in the mod is a melee "War Chariot," but doesn't require horses to make up for the lack of ranged attack. I did this because if you look at the driver of the chariot, he is obviously carrying a macuahuitl, and not a bow.




Warrior: Tlamani. Probably use the game's Jaguar unit. But, just in case: Special Name? Art from ryanjames/davey_henninger;s Olmec civ.




Scout: Mixpetsoani




Spearman: Tepoztopilli Teyaotlani




Galley: Akalli From Uruk's Orc Ship model.




Trireme: Yaoyoakalli. From TPangolin's Wabanaki civ. Can be recolored, and easily converted to a Galley (ranged) unit.

Composite Bowman: Tequihua teyaochiuani




Catapult: Teatlatl From Uruk's Barbarian Catapult model.





Swordsman: Cuauhocelotl Second unit is from MC-Leugi's Mayan civ

Renaissance Units: See Post #18 for a closer look at the current versions of these units.


Cannon: Can? From Space Walrus's Mexico mod (just the Civil War scenario rebel Parrot Gun. Needs recoloring)




Musketman: Mosquetero. From Pouakai's Mexican and Tpangolin's Tlingit civs. The last one is Deliverator's Conquistador Musketman unit, which is what we'll use.




Lancer: Caballeria Pesada. Will use the game's Conquistador model for this unit. Alternatives shown are from Leugi's Gran Colombia mod, and from MC-Leugi's Shoshone mod. Third is from Sukritact's Anishinaabe civ.




Caravel: Carabela. Can reuse the existing Caravel, but recolored to look more Aztecy. I've done this before in my Brittany custom civ mod (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1475168778).





Privateer: Corsario. Another Breton recolored unit.





Frigate: Fragata. Another Breton recolored unit.

 

Industrial Units: See Post #19 for a closer look at the current versions of these units.


Gatling Gun:


Artillery: Any of the first 4 would be fine, although I think the Russian 75 could work for the Gatling Gun.




Rifleman: Name? From Civitar and Leugi's Rio dela Plata civ. The third picture is an Aztec/Mexican Rifleman pack. Obviously, any of these can be used for any musket/rifleman unit.





Cavalry: From Leugi's Rio dela Plata civ. Third model is from Leugi's Argentina civ.

Machine Gun:


Anti-Air Gun: Keeping in theme with German units for Aztecs, or the generics.




Great War Infantry: From the Anzac unit pack, has good colors to start with.




Infantry: Soldado. From the game's Pracinha (Brazil) unit. Second from Pork Bean's UFC civ.





Landship: Recommend a recolored model from this - perhaps since Mexico flirted with Germany in WW1 (Zimmerman, anyone?), we should use the A7V, but with nice Aztec symbols?




Destroyer: Can "dress up" many of these models to give them the Aztec flair.

Great War Bomber: Any of these could be used for any of the planes. I've used the Short Bomber before. Works fine, just need to remove the "team color" roundels and substitute an Aztec one.





Triplane: For similar reasons as the Landship, perhaps stick with German-looking units - with the appropriate symbols (Roundels) for the Aztecs and/or Mexico?

 

Atomic Units:

Mobile SAM: A fairly good mix.





Paratrooper: One of these should make a good start:





Tank: Can use any of these, appropriately recolored.





Bomber: Can use any of these, appropriately recolored.




Fighter: German Units for Aztecs?




Helicopter Gunship: Uses a Soviet model, which after WW2, it seems the Aztecs would tend to change allegiances to someone who would put pressure on the USA.




Atomic Bomb: I plan on using the B-29 model that the game usually uses, but with some obnoxiously painted war bird covering the plane.

 

Information Units: Most of these units will look much like regular game units, but will emblazoned with Aztec symbology prominently to stand out from those regular units. Just need to decide exactly what that symbol will be.

Great Admiral: name? From MC-Leugi's Inca civ





Great General: name? From Leugi's Gran Colombia. We can easily add a nice Aztec symbol to the flag! Also from Leugi's Mapuche civ. Third is from MC-Leugi's Shoshone civ.




Great Prophet: From TPangolin's The Dene civ.





Inquisitor: From TPangolin's Zapotec Battlepriest and Sukritact's Anishinaabe civs.

 

Misc. Unit Models: Can be used just about anywhere to replace other models.


Cargo Ship: Could easily be made into a light destroyer type unit.

 

The Aztec Symbols: These aren't replacement civ icons that are used in various places around the game's UIs/popups. The symbols we're looking for would be the ones that appear on the unit models themselves, like the Iron Cross seen on many of the German units listed above.

The symbols should be fairly plain, as these models, ultimately are quite small, and a lot of intricate detail won't be visible when you finally see the unit on the map.

Another thing to consider is that we can use different symbols for land units, and different ones for air units (most nations do), so we'll need to select both a land unit symbol and an air unit roundel.

Alternative Civs: While the mod will definitely add the normal game's Aztec civ, what other custom civs should also be allowed to use these units?

We should compile a list of mods/links, so I can be sure to add those civs to the Civilization_UnitClassOverrides table.

Version 1 of the Ancient Era units:




All units up and working, except the "Chariot Archer" - don't have a working model of that yet, so I added a "War Chariot" that has a melee attack, but doesn't require horses to make up for the lack of ranged attack.

Also, added the Galley unit, which is a ranged version of the Trireme.

The Warrior unit shown is is the Jaguar alternative. Probably won't use it, though. The Jaguar looks pretty cool already.

If there is anything you want to see recolored, let me know.

I know the icons aren't fixed yet, but I'll wait until I get to the end to do all of the units at the same time.

Land Units: The Lancers are from the Conquistador unit, and the Cannon unit is simply the Rebel Parrot Gun from Civ5 Civil War scenario. I've recolored about all that is physically possible.





The ships have an Aztec sun symbol I found. Added the other 2 symbols you wanted.

Land Units: Haven't quite finished the infantry unit. It has the 3 models from the Aztech Rifleman Pack, but I've also added a recolored French Foreign Legion model in the mix, as it looks much closer to one of the picture s you sent me for infantry units at the time. Can add/drop which ever one you like better.
