So, there's this fun thing called 'reading the thread'. Please take note that even during the description of the noted Battle of Lechaion, when the Lakedaimonians were defeated by use of lightly armed troops, that Xenophon, the chronicler, made sure to mention that this was only because the mora in question was only defeated this way because it lacked its usual security from horse detachments, which generally accompanied a Lakedaimonian phalanx. Spartans had friggin' horses. They operated with a combined arms unit. They would have lost a war against the Aztecs if they were fighting it on Aztec home ground, but not because of their method of war, because of their vastly inferior numbers. (If we are in fact considering the Sparte of Leonidas or even that of Lysandros.)

The point is that a situation in which hoplitai would appear by themselves without support is of extremely low probability and thus a discussion solely based on the merits of said phalanx is not productive.

Ah, so the thread is less unproductive than his post? So it's like voting in democratic countries, lesser of two evils.

This is a difficult question, especially since we do not know the specifics of the battle. Assuming they are matched evenly (for this example 100 Spartans vs. 100 Aztecs), lets also assume it is the Spartans in the Aztec territory. If the Aztecs some how found their way to Sparta, they would probably be killed before they hit land. And if they all found their way to land with no loss in members, they would still be defeated on a territory not their own.

    So:

100 Aztecs vs. 100 Spartans on Aztec grounds. I think the Aztecs were quite horrific with their dress code and jungle ambushes. If the Spartans wouldn't let the new environment get to their heads and used the same technique they use in Greece, they would probably win but with some casualties.
