Barbs took out Hatty early. Score! I'll have Thebes if I can get there in time. I kill the one barb warrior, but now Thebes want to join its motherland. Hatty's dead, so what gives?

Dead civs shouldn't have cultural presence on the map, so this looks like a bug that was caused by the barbs eliminating an AI. The unhappiness will go away ast enough, adding a cultural building will help a great deal with that. You should whip the ikhanda and build a monument/library.

They don't want to join their Egyptian motherland, they want to join their Barbarian motherland. Since the Barbarians can never be eliminated, they'll always have a presence. You'll just have to live with it until your culture can take over theirs.

Barbarians are eventually eliminated on many maps.

Assuming the barbs didn't build any cultural buildings while they owned Thebes, it's only going to have 2 total barb culture on that plot (just like you have there now that you own it.) So as soon as you start producing any culture at all there, the nationality % will tip in your favor and the unhappiness will go away in just a couple turns.

Gliese 581,

That statement is both true and untrue at the same time. While the Barbarians can be eliminated, they can always come back, thus they are not eliminated. That reminds me of this: The following statement is true. The previous statement is false. :crazyeye:

Anyways, the Barbarian culture is there for good. You will eventuall produce so much culture you will make the Barbarian culture insignificant.

Yeah, if they capture an AI city barb culture can grow and get fairly well established. The citizens will complain if you liberate them.

Spoiler :

Kind of like all of North America in the original Earth map for vanilla (The one without 18 civs).

From my experience yearn to rejoin motherland will not happen once all barb cities have been conquered or razed, this usually coincides with all territory being claimed, which if that's the case, puts a permanent end to the unhappiness issues.

Don't worry. "Barb culture" goes away a lot faster than the culture of civs, so it won't take much to eliminate the unhappiness. In the meantime, chop or pop rush a monument or something.

Building and whipping a library in that city is probably the best way to make use of it until you get some happiness resources. That will solve all your problems if you stay at size 3. It will produce culture and that will pop the city borders and get rid of the barbarian motherland, it will allow you to run 2 scientists and work the corn at size 3. Two scientists could get you an academy this early in the game. The city will eventually be very good once you get enough happiness to allow it to grow and work the seafood that seems to be there, so researching Monarchy for HR is a good idea.

Yeah library is definitely better, but he doesn't have enough pop to rush it straight away. Would it require 2 pop after you put a turn into the library?

It does indeed look like a good GP farm city.

Whip the Ikhanda now, start the library, whip the library 10 turns later.

I culture flipped a barb city on a recent game. ^^ I was pretty tickled to see the barbs wanting to join my mighty empire. :D
Outculturing it seems the way forward.

Awesome. :goodjob:

Did they build anything in the city?

I don't recall there being anything unusual there. Might have had a granary.
It was a funny occurrence really. I was sending a settler out to a prime spot and I turned out the barbs had set up shop just a few squares from where I wanted to be. Through mere coincidence it was a city that I wanted a few wonders in and my military were tied up elsewhere. I completely forgot about it during the war and then it flipped to me. :D
It's just awesome to imagine that the barbs were weary with their warmongering and wanted to better themselves. :p

Hmm. I wonder how research works with the barbarians. They obviously don't play by the same rules. I have seen barbarian riflemen on terra maps, but I kind of doubt each barbarian city individually researched rifling. They do seem to build really basic buildings sometimes: usually granaries and barracks. Yes I have seen a barracks in a barb city that was pumping out promoted units.

I've seen games where barbs have captured a holy city. Are you sure that's not what happened?
