I like and hate the new barbarians. Early challenge is great, however too much luck involved and sometimes no matter how good player you are you just get so much damage that it will be hard to recover.
In my current game I found and attacked a barb camp at turn5. it immediately spawned a warrior, then an other one next turn, then an other 2 turns later, then slingers 3 of them.. maybe there was an other camp just next to this one I don't know. And these could even be horsemen. The spawn rate is too high (ok this was on very high difficulty)
I was actually lucky because i got help from a city state, one of their warrior sacrificed himself to give me some time..
I sent my almost dead scout to scout a bit into uncharted territory and behold, an other barb camp and my 0 hp scout attacked it without hesitation.. it happened to me more than once, and this made me start this topic, I guess I'm not the only one who had this.

I've read about those bad barbarian experiences, but so far I didn't have them in the early game. However I have had several cases where I (or actually, the AI too) ignored a camp for too long, and suddenly in the mid game you see first crossbows and swordmen, then musketmen, bombards and artillery marching towards your cities...this was a low difficulty setting, and they didn't actually attack my closest city. I imagine on higher difficulties my city would've been toast.

Barbarians are the second thing killing the game for me. It's not about the early game, it's about the mid-game, where it becomes nothing more than an annoying frustration for every centimeter of the world to be carpeted with a literally endless spam of scouts....which are allowed to destroy trade caravans.

It's too relentless in the mid game. Either have barbarians be a far more in-depth feature, or phase them out quickly so the focus can shift to the rise of the civilisations. What I DON'T want is to spend the entire span of the God damned game, especially since I play on Marathon, dealing with a horde of ****ING ORCS. That's what they are! They don't bother putting any rhyme or reason to what they do, they're just ORCS, running around pillaging things until they die and they don't care about anything else. It's pathetic. We're at Civ 6 and instead of DOING something with this 'feature', they've doubled down on making them spring fully formed out of the evidently cursed ground A SINGLE TURN AFTER YOU KILL THE ENCAMPMENT. And blammo! With another scout too!

in my last game an ai attacked me ith his carpet of doom, but i fended them with my city walls, then when i destroyed most of his armies I saw that their country was pillaged by 4-5 barbarian knights.. no one had knights at that time, but the barbarians..

I have noticed one strange thing with barbs. Scout was watching barb camp waiting for my archer. Out of the fog came unescorted russian settler, went by the camp (zone control! - yeah, free settler), but no, he settled city two clicks behind camp. What is more interesting after some turns missionary made the same thing. Barbs completely ignored russian units. Maybe the reason for this was the carpet of barb doom coming from unsettled part of continent? They were so busy in my territory...

Ive found the barbs to be pretty manageable actually. Instead of having your archers be in your city, have them be out near or on your more vulnerable districts. Check the map to see if any camps have spawned from time to time, and try to crush them before they even send a scout. Military units, particularly early game units are really cheap in civ VI, so don't be afraid to get an extra few if you need the help with barbs. Having horses really helps too, they can kill scouts before they report back.

The game really should notify you about scouts and new camps, but if you scan the map for new camps, you can handle it pretty well.
