It has happened enough times that I gotta ask... is there code making barbarian units move to intercept my unguarded units passing close by?

For example, an Archer leaving a barb city... (not in itself unheard of) and "by chance" moving to the one square adjacent to where my unit will automove next turn. In effect, when its my turn I can only watch as one of my units automoves into suicide.

Can it really be bad luck each time?!

(Tried searching, couldn't find anything on this highly specific subject)

If your units move within view of a barbarian unit, the barb will move to intercept. So, automove is not a good idea when moving units through unclaimed territory. It is a much better idea to look each turn and manually move your unit towards its goal to avoid the barbs, if your unit is not able to take on the barb with a high chance of success.
