Some body was complaining that this game wasn't exciting enough? How's getting sneak attacked sound to you? Exciting enough? Good, let's go.
When I inherited the game, it was peaceful enough. I renewed the lux deal with the Portugues. We were giving them 2 luxuries for their 1 luxury plus some gpt which they could no longer afford, so I changed it to a 1-for-1 straight swap instead.
I also decided to reinforce our island holdings a bit, as all of them are still defended by a single regular spear. So I woke up our transport and load 6 vet infantries into them.
If both of these actions somehow contributed to the Portugues attacking us... well, someone else can load up the 1450 save and find out.
Okay, so I was happily going along. Boring turns, you know. Then, during the 1455 inter-turn, I was informed that we lost our wine

, and then we lost Leptis Magna

, and then a big stack of workers
Appearently, because both "show enemy moves" and "show friendly moves" were off, the Portugues had landed a transport load of troops last turn without me noticing them. Then this turn, they simple walked into a undefended city.
Of course, this mean WAR!
First, I signed every available civ into an alliance. We may not have the biggest army, but we do have the biggest bank roll, so I wanted to take advantage of that. The Dutch were already at war (they were at war with almost everybody already), so they are the only one left out of the alliance.
And now that we're at war, we could "safely" plant spys. The first try succeeded. The Purple Menace had over 140 infantries and 57 frigates. That is a huge, and obsolete fleet.
I then filled up 2 of our empty armies with infantry, and with help of the few artilleries that we had, destroyed the invaders and retook Leptis Magna. Wouldn't you know it, with our very first attack with our only elite:
Yeah, that was an archer, against a redlined cav.
Once our continent was cleared of invaders, and "show enemy moves" was turn on

, I knew that we were safe from attacks. It's time to make the Portugues pay for their sneak attack. In keeping with spirit of the game, I didn't want to attack their mainland. However there were some island holding of theirs that looks juicy, that were either putting culture pressure on our cities or sharing an island with our cities. I think we could take those.
To these ends, I turn up the military production. Along with a bunch of short-rushing, produced a nice fleet of ships and a few more infantries and artilleries.
Mean while, the Portugues continued to land units on our mainland as well as Nora, one of our island cities. I was able to get units into Nora in time (remember that transport I sent out on the first turn), and always attacked the invading cavs (defending produces WW, which we could do without).
With the new ships, our navy had gained dominence over our coastal waters, with our battleships (2), destroyers (many), MoW's (many, and gaining), and 2 subs (neat toys, they are) blowing their frigate out of the water.
By turn 7, 1485 AD, the turn that our Pentagon finished, I was able to land 3 full infantries armies and 9 artilleries onto the 2-city island to our south. 2 turns later, we took Launda, which had quite a few defenders due to a loaded transport in its docks. On 1500 AD, turn 10, we took Oea and the whole island.
Through out my turns, I continued to build peace time buildings in the cities that needs them, since there were enough cities on wealth to take care of our military need.
As I hand the game off, we have a nice huge fleet to the south. Our armies needs a bit of healing. There is a Portugues battleship near our coast, I have left enough ships still active for the next leader to deal with it (there are also ships fortified in London). There are also a lot of deals due next turn, including most of our luxury deal, so don't forget to renew those. The Summerians have a monopoly on Amphibious, and that's it for the AI's tech progress. Our alliance will run through the next leaders' turns, so have fun
