I used to get colds and flu's all the time when I was younger and fatter.

    OK.
How many times were you hospitalized for it back then?
Fat protects you from severe flu.

Is this skinny as in anorexic or skinny as in not-obese?

Reasonable enough reporting, I suppose. Unlike the OP, the USA Today article didn't draw any conclusions and just presented the data.

Just as a side note, the USA Today website look kind of clashes with my impression of said paper being among the most reputable in the US.

The USA Today paper and its infamous infographic (TM) were often the source of bemusement and derision amongst the paper-readers at GT. We preferred the NYT and AJC when they were available.

Ok, lets try some basic math.

NEARLY half means less than 50 percent, right?
So more than half the hospital cases were skinny people, right?

So if you want to increase your odds of being hospitalized for the flu, be skinny.

If you are not obese, you are skinny?

    Yes

More than half were not obese. That's not the same as skinny. I'm not obese but borderline overweight. That's not skinny.

So if you want to increase your odds of being hospitalized for the flu, be skinny.

That doesn't follow. You neglect the fact that significantly less than half of Americans are obese.

1 troll and 1 human died in a bridge collapse last year.

Trolls make up 3% of the human + troll population on average (with higher concentrations in the southern US).

from this data I conclude humans die more often than trolls do in bridge collapses.

So with the rate of obese people of admission increasing, by extension the rate of non-obese people being admitted is declining.

I would say get a flu shot and then eat whatever you want.
