I like to protect all my electronics w/ APC units. They've served me well for over a decade. So, w/ a laptop, the thing is already sort of getting it's power through a battery, so would it be pointless to bring along an APC unit to protect it from noise from the commercial power grid? I swear by APCs - so I'm keen on protecting my new laptop. But, I'm just not sure if it's redundant.

The power brick converts the wall AC into regulated DC before it ever hits your laptop, so power conditioning shouldn't be a problem. The bricks usually take anywhere from 100-240VAC, so the usual spikes on the line aren't too bad for a quality brick. You shouldn't leave your battery plugged in if you aren't going to be using it for awhile, to lengthen it's life, so a UPS would provide outage protection, but that's about it.

Not to mention surge protection. I dunno, seems like all that compact, high tech sensitive stuff in laptops needs to be supplemented with a nice bulky, heavy APC unit.
