Please read the text below, it's very interesting - see for yourself.
To draw your attention I can say that if you follow this idea, you'll be able to get UNSUPPORTED (i.e. zero-maintenance cost) VETERAN units for a very reasonable price, e.g. a Cavalry (20 shields) for around 41 coins or a Musketeer (30 shields) for some 62 coins (no shields required). If you rush build them in one of your cities they would cost you I reckon something like 80 coins and 120 coins respectively, plus you'll need to spend one shield per unit to support it, plus it would cause unhappiness in the home city if you have representative government (Republic/Democracy). So, as you can see it's a good deal to get military units via a BARB FARM.

I've found this in one of Civilization guides (it's written for Civilization 2 nevertheless it's 100% applicable to Civilization 1) :
THE BARB FARM
Once the Barbs have a city they start producing military units. If you do not recapture or destroy their city you can "farm" it for cheap units (keep your Diplomats nearby to bribe them as they come out), and if it is far enough away from your own cities these units will be unsupported. If you are trying to set up a farm deliberately, put a Barracks in the city before giving it to them. The resulting units will be Veterans, which does not increase the price but can greatly increase their military strength. You may need to protect your farm from AI civs, though: sometimes they make a bee-line for the Barb city and try to wipe it out.
---
Some other additional data that can be helpful :
To get an unsupported unit, initiate the bribe when the unit is closer to any other city than one of your own.
... barbarians may appear along any coast or in any unsettled area.
Sea Raiders: Barbarians that invade from the sea are looking for a place to settle. They search for cities and attempt to capture them. They do not pillage mines and irrigation because of their interest in making a permanent settlement. If they capture a city, they take it over and begin producing more units to make new assaults. Sea raiders can be fought on land or engaged at sea in their ships.
Land Barbarians: These raiders are interested only in loot, not permanent settlements. This makes them very harmful as they pillage any mines or irrigation they encounter. If they capture one of your cities, they utterly destroy it. For these reasons, land barbarians are best engaged as far from your cities as possible.

So, as we can see a BARB FARM can be created using Sea Raiders not Land Barbarians.
AND HERE IS MY QUESTION. What's the best approach to creating a BARB FARM.
A few thoughts
1. If you're on a small or medium sized island, land is a valuable commodity and it's difficult to allocate some land for a BARB FARM. It looks like it is easier to create one on one of nearby islands. Build a fort there, put a phalanx (later a musketeer) there and diplomats to bribe barb units, and then ship them to the mainland. What do you think about this idea ?
2. Another question I've got is what's the best location of a city for a BARB FARM in terms of probability of Sea Raiders to emerge in that area. It is absolutely impossible to predict where they appear next time. What do you think about it ?
