Postcount is a vital part of the Poster Respect Algorithm:

Respect = sqrt(P) + Dj/Di + I + N.

where
P is the person's postcount divided by the observer's postcount;
Dj/Di is the join year of the observer divided by the join year of the person;
I is the ideology constant, which is a measure of the person's political views adjusted for the views of the observer;
N is the noteriety constant: different posters have different noteriety based on past actions. #fiftychat, the SF Three, etc.

So postcount matters, but as time goes on the other factors matter more. :)

My PRA number is 2.8.......hey, wait a minute, that's awfully low! :crazyeye:

Voted "solves everything" because it solves everything.

Though that ongoing strawman thread is threatening to make another one, albeit with concerted effort.

It depends on the observer, too. :)

I'm still working on a General Theory of Poster Reputation. Might post it in H&J sometime.

One of Fifty's posts reminded me of another good meme.

Rasist :lol:

What happened to personality and general likability? ;)

I'm still working on it. ;)

There'll be a Poster Respect Algorithm (PRA) to measure a person's respect for another, and then a General Theory of Reputation (GTR) that essentially sums the individual PRAs and comes to a general measure of forum respect.

I'm still working on the variables. :)

Perhaps that should be log(P) rather than sqrt(P). And what is the zero-point for Dj and Di? It makes a big difference if, say 2000 is the starting point versus 1 AD.

The idea is to get a damping factor on postcount, and log(P) or ln(P) works as well as sqrt(P). Actually, it would work better, since ln(P) has a nicer derivative than sqrt(P). The geometrical interpretation may be easier.

The zero year would be the year that the forum started--IIRC, that was in 2000 or 2002. Actually, just make it 2000.

The Ideology constant will probably be linked somehow to Political Compass scores. They're not perfect, but at least it's a widely-available data set.

The Noteriety constant is tricky. A general Likability constant is even trickier. I'll brood on this over the weekend. (I have nothing better to do. Midterms are over, and finals are three weeks away.) I'll probably make a thread in H&J about it by Monday or Wednesday. :)

I mean this in the best possible way buddy, but I think there are better things to do with your weekend

Mathematical babble

Kinda has that effect on me.

....survey says you're wrong!

The answer is the Princess photos ad infinitum.

Typical economist. Integral spouts off mathematically about something which he has no clue about. Perfy, forum archivist, could do a much better job of explaining the pertinent factors that go into poster respectability.
