What do you think the best attribute is? I'd say either Expansionistic or Industrious. Expansionistic: Early techs and settlers (thanks to scout). Industrious: Tons of roads, irrigation, mines, and later RR is always usefull. The extra shields are nice too.

My favorite is industrious, but you might want to do a search - this same question has been addressed, and polls taken, many many times before.

same here. religious is best, because of the points mentioned above and for my own nerves: I just can't stand it to have no control over my empire in modern age for 1 or 2 hours of real time when in anarchy.

hmmm.. Japan seems like the strongest Civ when it comes to traits. The samurai isnt that bad of a unit either. I might have to give them a try next time.

edit: My bad .. Japan is military / religious. Ignore me :)

Industrious and religious rule, but militaristic ain't that bad too IMHO, building one wonder after another with help of great leaders is pretty much fun.

1 or 2 hours??!! That seems kind of an over-statement!

I would have to say my favorite is Industrious... But lately i have been playing non-Industrious Civilizations, and have been getting by fairly well. If i could`nt say Industrious, i might say Scientific. I used to take it for granted, but when not playing a Scientific civ there seem to always be someone ahead of me in the tech race.

well, I played the germans on a huge map and was at war...

...and I am a very slow player of course

my vote:
1. religious
2. industrious
3. scientific
4. militaristic
5. commercial
6. expansionistic

Industious rules for its good tech you start with and the fast workers give you a head start. Expansionistic also gives you a head start (but not on smaller maps). Religious is good for its cheap temples and no anarchy. After that Scientific is worth mentioning for its free tech and cheaper science. I don't care about Commercial and Militairistic.

1. industrious
2. scientific
3. expansionistic
4. religious
5. commercial
6. militaristic

I used to have a different view regarding expansionistic but since PTW, where getting early barbarians can be even more disastrous for your empire (pillaging) and the introduction of the advanced tribe, I think the expansionistic trait deserves to be higher on my list.

I still do not rate it as high as industrious and scientific though.

Religious
Scientific
Militaristic
Industrious
Expansionist
Commercial

Expansionist trait value heavily depends on map size. On huge map Expansionist is the best trait. On tiny map it is useless.

There is no single "correct" preferrence list, since it depends on many parameters, e.g.:
  • huge map, few civs->expansionist
  • small continent with competing civs->militaristic
  • 3 billion year cold world->industrious
Personally, I consider religious pretty useless. I keep my people happy, therefore the switch from despotism to monarchy/republic takes about 2 turns, amd the second to democracy will take 4-5 turns. Small loss, overall. And for happiness, I prefer to build marketplaces, because of their dual use: cash+happiness.

PS: Given the choice, with everything else random, I would probably choose industrious+scientific. :)

@tao- yea, but you can't beat the culture that comes with temples/cathedrals. :D
Just look at the culture statistics:
  • temple:2 - library:3
  • cathedral:3 - university:4
Science wins 7:5! :D :D

Errr... Right...

Building an early temple helps a lot (bring out the whip!) if you're aspiring a cultural victory, since buildings over 1000 years old are producing double the culture. And you can't build libraries that early. And, depending on your style of play, on most higher levels it's not much of an use trying to out-research the AI, so there's less need for libraries.

It all depends on the system you have... :)
Believe me, something like one turn can take around 20 minutes (at least that's what i suffered from before i upgraded my PC)

Back to the topic, i believe that Industrious is pretty much one of the best, especially concerning the workers speed which is an advantage.
Scientific can be cool (cheaper Libs and Unis + 1 free advance)
Besides, as mentioned by Tao, Science beats Religious in terms of culture...

So best combo is Industrious + Scientific...
Hence, Persia rules (not forgetting the powerful immortals)

looks like most of you are saying egypt is the best. i often play with egypt myself.

I didn't vote as I like them all. You guys need to take another look at commercial, it reduces corruption (this ability was increased since 1.29f) adds wealth and starts with alphabet. Also militaristic gives lots more upgrades and so more leaders, with a few wars this can add up to an extra wonder per era (or at least every two eras) which I will put up against an extra tech advance per era any day. Anyway, I like to play all the civs and try to tailor my stratagy to suit.

Honestly I think the "best" characteristic is the one that suits your style of play. I'm a builder, so I go for industrial/scientific. Conqueror types shouldn't play a game without militaristic. It all depends on what your goal is.
