So, I am playing Rome, one a tectonic map, stuck on the big continent but with such a totally sweet start, I am miles ahead and have every wonder in Rome save for Pyramids (suck!) and Mausallos (enh, wish I'd had that one). I have vassalized the Holy Romans (damn straight) and Portugal is just bothering me to the south, mainly because they snuck a couple settlers in and messed up my pretty border with them. I am crushing these cities with culture, they are down to just a few squares, but they won't flip. Dammit, I hate Portugal...

So what to my surprise happens? An Portugeuese agent has been detected/defected, what? I can declare war, but it's like he did? AND I GET 10 TANKS!?!?!?!

Sweet manna from the virgin's womb, it's magic.

Is there an event more prosperous in the game? I mean, I couldn't have invented an event that was more fortuitous for me. I can declare war, have it not be my fault, and get 10 tanks when I had just researched them like 3 turns ago.

Beautiful. Civ 4 has come full circle, from a buggy early mess to BtS which is by far the best Civ experience ever. Wonderbar.

The 'Federal Reserve' reduce inflation event is the best ever, unless you dislike that its totally unbalancing.

I had a plane crash on my country and i kept it and got 1/4 of the research for flight. It helped me catch up but i never had that. Then again im usaly germany and i get panzers which woop all other tanks untill the advent of heles, then ya gota add heles to the stack so im all good :p

The tower sheilds event that grants your swordsmen the anti-archery promotion.

I think my swordsmen were prats that game and I marched over 7 civs with them.

Lots of people here think the Pyramids are too expensive an investment, but I am not sure anyone here has ever said that they suck. :)

No argument there. Joao is the guy who makes you want to drag out the game just to get nukes.

I thought the "suck!" was that it sucked that he didn't get them.....

In general federal reserve is best, but at the right time others can be a match (the aformentioned, just researching industrialism, and suddenly having 10 tanks moving at your enemy can be huge or cover for praets, free pinch to muskets while spamming oromos, etc...)
Federal reserve just wins cause it is ALWAYS good.

He was a ok allie, tech was alright, he always had something to trade and i could turn to him always for some reason for more resources for my corps

Actually, I don't think the Pyramids are really all that great - by the time I want to actually change governments, I already have the civic researched. They were a little OP in ye olde days, with a free granary in every city, but anymore they seem just a waste to me. It's not like anyone is rushing to Police State...

The cruddy little Stonehenge is killing the Pyramids - Pyramids deserve to be better than they are. I saw someone did a Sphinx wonder as well, very cool companion (though not executed as well as I would have liked).

Now mind you, it doesn't HURT to get the Pyramids, but there is a reason I see them built so late - I mean if the AI can figure out they aren't worth it, then damn...

What do you need for the Federal Reserve event? Damn I had to have 50 cities with bank...

Representation! Raises your happy cap early and doubles the effectiveness of your scientists (more than doubles, actually, given that you need a library to run them).

Yeah mostly that, but also Police State can be handy early, at least if you are spiritual in an early war. Pyramids are probably the best wonder in the game if you are going for a specialist economy, especially if you settle most of your great specialists. Also, it gives Engineer GPP, which few wonders do early.

But I think Venger prefers Hereditary Rule.

thats a great event! i had the federal reserve event once, which helped a lot.

in regards to wonders... the best is the GLH, by far.

Unless you don't have many coastal cities, than it's useless.

I had the tank event today playing the Germans. If i had known I wouldnt of blown all my cash on upgrading units!!! Strangely enough the option was to start a war with Portugal as well.

Would of been nice with Panzers a few turns away!! Still needed combustion though.

I am concerned by the time Panzers arrive i may not have enough nations left to declare war on if they keep becoming vassels to me.

even though im a late convert to SE's...i have to say, the pyramids are the best early game wonder by far, especially if you dont factor in production cost which can affect the equation substantially..
(and the three gorges are the best late game wonder)
