    Looking at the poll right now it seems to be going Engineer followed by artist, with prophets and scientists tying for third. So perhaps a better question is: "What makes the great merchant the least useful Great Person in the game?"

    My faviorite is the prophet. this gives you gold if you get a religion. also the +2 production and +5 Gold, this is very good at the start when you've got the Stonehenge and oracle.

    My next favourite are the engineer/Scientist.

    The fact that artists are second-ranked in this poll is alarming and makes me afraid.

    There are not a lot of uses for the commerce he generates sending him to another civ unless one has the proper civics selected, plus the time factor to send them on long and potentially dangerous journey. Most of the lightbulb techs they give can be acheived through other GP's, so there is a lot of overlap there.

    In general, I feel the entire commerce/trade/economic aspects of the game have been sorely neglected. Especially considering that economies have played prominent roles in the growth of powerful civilizations for a longer period of time than the game chooses to represent.

    If commerce is going to be the bulkhead for scientific research, then a Great Scientist seems to make more sense to develop.

    So, in the end, with the exception of grabbing some cash (that has extremely limited uses), almost anything a merchant could be used for is covered by another type of GP.

    It always depends on the situation.

    Artists are huge in cultural victories and almost required in many cases. They are also the best GP for military campaigns because the closer your border is to your enemy the better. I don't know how many times I've lost tons of troops because I had to travel three spaces to get to the city I wanted to attack. If you only have to go 1-2 spaces that means the enemy has less time to mobilize and your initial push is more likely to be a success (note: this is useless against more developed or interior cities though). It is also good for trapping an underdeveloped city in your culture border, which is pretty much 99% guarunteed to cause it to flip on lower difficulties.

    Prophets are good if you have holy cities. They also have the best discoveries, as early prophets tend to teach you things such as Theology, Divine Right, etc. that lead to founding new religions. Early in the game you want prophets, but after they've created their holy cities they aren't that great.

    Scientists are the most valuable in the early and mid parts of the game, as a good tech lead is guarunteed to give you the best score and a military edge over anyone. Late in the game they are nearly worthless. Try founding an academy in your best commerce city and then putting all your great scientists in there (along with making all specialists scientists). Add libraries, monastaries, university and Oxford and you should end up with a city that does all the research for your civ by itself.

    Great Engineer's are probably the second best early in the game because they have the most effect then. Strategic wonder rushing can win the game for you easily. Early game engineers usually require the pyramids though, but they can be gotten mid-game with forges. The problem with them late in the game is it takes more than one to get the same effect out of a wonder rush, and there are fewer good wonders late as well. Saving one for the Three Gorges Dam or Statue of Liberty is always a good idea though.

    There really isn't much to spend money on in Civ 4.

    Mind you, the cash from a Great Merchant is what allows me to win a huge war a lot of the time. It allows you to upgrade a huge chunk of your army, saving 10 turns worth of building time. Being able to attack in a snap is useful.

    But my first point still stands.

    I think prophets have the best super-citizen.

    Engineers have the best special ability.

    Scientists are the only other ones I find useful.

    Though artists can be put to use should I get one, but I'd rather one of the other 3.

    great merchants are the only GP (and one of the only units in the game) who can explore rival territory w/o open borders.

    i think its great prophet specifically moses although i think moses shouldent b degraded to JUST bein a prophet since he was an excellent military leader little known though he made an army on his way to the promised land... however this army dident get to see battle until AFTER he died :(

    I vote scientist.

    Prophets are the best early on, and engineers are best in the mid-late game, however scientists (for academys) are the best throughout history...... so seeing as I've only got one vote, the all-rounder has to get it.

    great merchants also give an extra food, if you make them a specialist.

    For that reason, if I don't need to build a shrine, they are my default choice.
