Monty Python, followed by The Fast Show.

Kind of devoid of good sketch shows on TV at the moment, but I am sure that the next round of university students will be able to produce something. :D

EDIT: Dead Ringers is gold, but I don't think it made the transition to tele very well. Should've stuck to Radio 4 where it allowed them to have a much wider range of characters. It really made hillarious listening.

I agree with you there, CrackedCrystal. Ferral was holding that show together. *sigh* Now he is just going to keep on making B movies...;)

there's always somebody who is the "workhorse" of that show. chevy chase, bill murray, eddie murphy, dana carvey, phil hartman, will farrel... looks like the next one will probably be jimmy fallon, who i really don't find funny at all.

Monty Python's Flying Circus. Unfortunately that is, considering how long ago it was made.

Time is exactly what we don't have.

SCTV (orginally Second City) was fantastic. as was MP and SNL in the beginning, and then in the Eddie Murphy period. The best: probably MP, but it was close. Good thread.

The Fast Show! It has to be.

I'm too young to have seen the monty pyton series but the movies were classics.

Bah, give him time. He just has to learn to stop laughing at his own jokes. ;)

Ooh! I was wondering if anyone else had heard of this. They have to stop relying on the dirty and/or racist jokes though - it will only get them so far. :p

SNL (I find the humor too dry....)

Kids in the Hall was good too, but I was young when that was on TV...

Ah, sketch comedy! The one entertainment area where Sweden can compete with the best of what the world has to offer!

In fact, excluding Python all of my favourite sketch comedy series are Swedish:

    Nile City/Percy Tårar
    Varan TV
    Hipp Hipp
    En Himla Många Program/Tornardo
Any one of the many Fredde Granberg, Peter Settman series
    Parasit TV

It's a damn shame that all you foreigners won't ever be able to experience Farbror Barbro, Farbror Vattenmelon, Urban Spänge and all the others. It's really hillarious.

SNL has twenty minutes (thats being generous) worth of good material and the rest of it sucks.

Saturday Night Live has sucked rotten eggs for about ten years. I keep waiting for the cast to improve but they seem to get worse and worse. Who would think I would watch and "miss" Tim Brewer or Dennis Miller. Not since the days of Dana Carvey and Mike Meyers has it been "on point" consistently, though I will admit to a chuckle here or there from time to time.

Much better sketch comedy abounds- Kids in the Hall was great. At the moment, the Dave Chappelle Show on comedy central wednesday nights at 1030 EST (conveniently after south park) pushes the limits of what you can see on TV very refreshing and hilarious; sadly they opt for music video in the final segment but the first three episodes have been incredible. (The blind old black man who doesn't know he's black and has become a hooded white supremacist was my favorite skit so far).

HBO's Mr. Show (first two seasons available on DVD) is the modern American equivalent of Monty Python with the segues and inter-relatedness and again, if you get the chance and haven't seen it, it is worth it, it is hilarious.
