Im glad to say im getting the hang of the game real fast now.
However - Still an important question remains.

Should I win by not attacking or instigating a war? Should I go all out and conquer every civ nation? Should I give give give and never take? Or should I wait for the United Nations?

It depends. If you think like Pinkey and the Brain, conquest is the only acceptable way. However, if you are more like me, and are the nice neutral, peacful guy the UN is better. Et cetera.

personally, approaching the game in a peaceful manner works for me. i concentrate on growth and happiness. but i've learned the ai nations are very jealous, so i stay current with military technology. very seldom do i start a war, unles i need there land. but let one of those big-headed, over-charging, no-cultured sleezeballs attack me, and i'll pound them into oblivian. (if posible). so in a nutshell, self development until attacked. then raise hell. keep your reputation up, your people happy and smart. good luck...

Whoa, that's nice, I always find it hard to do that. I'm more of a defense guy. The only time my offensive was the slightest bit successful was when I had modern armor and the AI did not even have infantry(chieftain level).

Well if you get a good start at the beginning and lots of room to build a good economic structure and Military. You can make it up to one of the strongest civs on the planet. If your stuck in some wedge of 2 civs one left one right its a lot harder. I personally go for crush fast while im good. And later i plan on crushing weaker civs just for more land...And money! But i always have lots of workes to irrigate land and build mines and get rid of pollution, while in cities where theres nothing left to build i build an army ya know.:santa:

I think that you win how ever you want to.
It's a personal preference for everybody.
In my past few games I keep winning by non-military means (UN & Space Race).

To spicen things up, for my next game, I am going to turn off "Win by culture, win by UN, and win by space race" so that I would only be able to win by histograph (boooo), conquer, or domination. I think this will present more of a challenge for me, and it will stop the damn AI from building the spaceship in freaking 1700!!

Again, how you win is soley up to you, and you should look deep within your soul, see what type of person you are, and figure how how exactly you want to beat a bunch of 1's and 0's :goodjob:

Just finished my second full game (I've conceded defeat on four others) on a large map where I had every intention of winning by domination (and I must have been close, but there was still a lot of work to do).

But really I stated getting bored so during a peaceful lull I held UN votes and squeaked through. I found afer a while the huge empire thing got tedious and ended it before nukes made it just that much more complicated.

I think for myself, at least, I'll only try conquest/domination on smaller maps.

This is on regent whith 1.17f, btw.
