BEWARE of the Wu!

Seriously, that mofo backstabbed every homeboy she could get her traitor hands on. I would be wary of her. Very wary.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wu_Zetian

She was certainly the "black widow" of Chinese history if there ever was one. Empress Dowager was also very ruthless, although there are historical arguments that differ on whether or not she was actually an Empress. Either way - you are right... Wu Zetian could do the political intrigue with the best of 'em.

Very colourful language to describe a lady, but I suppose thatyou don't get to be empress of China if you don't know how to :backstab: resolve a few disputes.

Btw, weren't you drooling over her ... features in another thread just yet.

That's assuming Firaxis built her personality that way in the game. From her speech on the Civ V website, she says China are a nation that pursues peace and self-development, and as long as others do not encroach upon China, China will not encroach upon others. That's my translation anyway.

I still don't understand why the developer choose Wu over Liu Bang.

Hmm, you might as well ask, why not Zhuge Liang, Cao Cao, Emperor Qianlong, etc.

There are lots of historical figures they could have chosen to represent China. I personally like having a woman to stand alongside Catherine and Elizabeth in the game.

when Civ V was announcedd I was actually taking a class on pre modern china in college and we spent a good deal on Wu, so when I found she was the leader I was kinda surprised, seemed they're were alot more choices to be had that had more influence than she did. I guess it's an effort to be diverse and have some women leaders.

I wonder if her disposition will be to make deals and alliances and then switch sides on you to gain advantage.

Ooh, cool translation.

That being said, I'd be shocked if any leader says "I'm going to attack you" in their first speech. It's possible that she'll promise to be nice and then do the opposite.

So why not use Indira Gandhi over Mohandas Gandhi, Maria Theresa over Bismark, Cleopatra over Ramses?

Well Napoleon does say "I am Napoleon of France, the most intelligent warrior of all time".

That pretty much says that he intends to step on your toes very soon.

Aggreed. I would

It all comes down to whether Firaxis wishes to present the personality of the particular leader or present the "personality" of a nation. "personality" of China as a whole might be a lazy rich and educated guy sits on his mat not looking very far, but individual emperors during certain periods were very different from that image.

I had like Wu and her China to be a scheming bastard type of civ. She keeps her peace with you, then forge a secret alliance to surround you, let it smother you, then turn you into her vassal out of her good will

Mohandas Gandhi is far too legendary as an Indian leader not to include, that would be like using someone other than Alexander for Greece.

That was an observation. :p I wasn't drooling over her!

I'm actually really glad she was the leader of China. She's very interesting.

If you want to know read the manual. It basically says that Wu Zetian's big accomplishment is that she's a woman. I mean I already suspected she's just in the game because Firaxis wanted an asian chick, but I didn't expect they'd be so upfront about it. They should have chosen Tang Taizong or Han Wudi, but whatever...at least it's not Mao.
Anyway, to become empress and stay in power she must have been pretty ruthless, but it's also likely that later confucian historians exaggerated her backstabbing and cruelty becasue she was a woman and a buddhist and we cant' have that, can we ?

So why not use Indira Gandhi over Mohandas Gandhi, Maria Theresa over Bismark, Cleopatra over Ramses?

That's a good question... why not?

Everyone always complains about Cleopatra, Maria Theresa wouldn't fit with what they represent Germany as. Indira Ghandi would be a very, very good choice, though.

Not cleopatra. Not ever. Please, she was greek and led to the demise of what little there was left of her country.

Why not? It's another female and something different.

It would also be something different to have another really fat guy, but imagine the outcry if Taft was the american leader in CIv 5.
The issue is not that Wu Zetian is a bad choice, it's that there are many better choices.
