Obama is just not that good, as a political operative. Recall that Boehner had him steadily giving ground on all of his priorities for at least 6 years, Obamacare came out half dead, he was prevented from ending the wars. In short, Obama didn't get things done. So how could he mastermind anything?

I tend to think this was Pelosi. Not by herself, but as the biggest hammer of nails on the coffin.

Someone, I think, really made it clear to Biden that some of the greatest defeats the Democrats have taken in the recent past have come from people who didn't bow out when their health was obviously on the decline. Diane Feinstien, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, even Ted Kennedy. Had those people been persuaded to step down, rather than dying in the saddle, the political landscape today would be a very different thing. And if anyone could make Biden see that, it was Pelosi. And if Biden could see that, retiring is the only responsible choice.

30 minutes in was terrible, but by the end he was doing better and Trump worse.

Except he was great at it.

And the issue was electability. His debate performance freaked people out by electability, because he was doing worse than the bar. Btw, the bar was Trump, who crushed the Republican debates, a guy whose superpower is the way he talks off the cuff. And he's still got it, though not as good as before.

So logically, democrats feared Biden's electability by stammering and not landing a few points (I did that in debates at my mentally sharpest age, and I was good at it) and looking like a tired old mouth breather (true), but Biden was doing better than Trump by the end, which should have counted! but the damage is done. The propaganda designed to trigger that bias took over for enough people. One debate. 6 years of seeing this man move slowly, 50 years of him tossing word salads, and 5 years of Republicans on Joe Rogan calling this man senile and one bad performance.

So better than Trump in a debate is not a low bar. Not the highest, Clinton and Biden did better overall before. But even the best athletes have dud days. And better than Trump in a debate was what mattered to the people afraid, not whether he's a good president. Because on that metric, as presidents, he's been great. And much better than young healthy smart sharp Obama was as president on most policy metrics and outcomes.

The Trump administration had a clear policy of escalating a trade war with China while deescalating and befriending Russia in order to drive a wedge between the two reminiscent of what Nixon did back in the day. The Biden administration on the other hand did everything they could to drive the two together and step on Russias toes. So Trump was better in that respect.
