I understand exactly what you mean, I've experienced that many times Even if i'm not in a technological lead, just the thought of building and orginize a huge invasion and defend your own land makes me wanna start a new game. Especially in the late game when I have to stop their planes, naval blockading and invasions, maurading gunships etc. Sometimes I just send tons of nukes, capture one city and make them capitulate.

The "let the AI finish my game" idea was brilliant.
You could also let the AI organize a fleet and/or defense in all cities/shores.
Or make a city automaticly send their finished units to a tile you choose.

I prefer to play "Small" maps, because otherwise the game takes too long.

I think I've completet two or three civ IV games. Somehow, I lose interest after a while. In my last game, someone took a shortcut and researched Railroad while everyone were running around with longbowmen.

Agreed! That would be excellent! Just let the AI take over for your civ and play out the remaining turns. Wow that would solve all my woes! Would it be possible to do this in a mod?

Go find the revolutions mod in the mod pack forums. You can disable the annoying "revolutions" portion of the mod (it makes your cities turn on you- really annoying) and be left with just the AI-Auto play feature. It lets you pick a number of turns and the AI will play that number for you. It's really great for getting the win when you're kinda tired of playing.
