I've been checking out how my Monarch EQM is progressing and was looking at the Machiavelli page (I'm the only one with all complete :goodjob:) and I noticed our very own host only has one game condition to complete this section.

Bindy, say it ain't so for next round

Hello again!

Round 7: It ain't so! (aka, Greece on a lake, U.N. style)

As I mentioned in this thread, I have devised a plan to achieve all the requirements for four of the six legs of the Elite Quattromaster Challenge.

I will try to post a thread around every two weeks with the game conditions, and then some highlights of my game, and encourage others to do the same. I also open the floor to discussions of strategy, as the regular HoF'ers never cease to amaze me with their insights into the game.

Another odd-numbered round which takes us back old school, on another oceanless map.

"Required" Settings:
Expansion: Vanilla/Warlords
Era: Ancient
Civilization: Greece
Victory Condition: U.N.
Game Speed: Normal
Map: Lakes

As Ozbenno noticed, I'm just a time victory short of the Machiavelli table for Monarch, and there are two time victories in the BEQM future, but we have a few more rounds before we have to face one, so enjoy a plain old regular kind of game, for no reason other than some of the games just have to fill space :)

Here again are the opponent requirements for various map sizes.
Code:
Mapsize Minimum Maximum
  Tiny 2 4
 Small 4 7
Standard 6 10
 Large 8 14
  Huge 10 17
Remember, Duel Maps are ineligible for the Elite Quattromaster Challenge.

Alex is Aggressive and Philosophical, which can mean early wars for expansion, and clever light bulbing all the way to Mass Media. I'm sure Ozbenno can fill us in on what not to research; whenever I try to figure it out, this happens: :crazyeye:

His UU is the phalanx, which is a 5 strength spearman, with 25% defense on hills. The UB, for Warlords players, is the uber-cultural Odeon, which is a Colosseum with culture and the ability to hire artists.

Alex starts with hunting and fishing.

If you're interested, the current best dates for a small map are:
Code:
Deity Bram 1220 A.D.
Immortal Bram 1220 A.D.
Emperor Jean d'Eath 1620 A.D.
Monarch FiveAces 1460 A.D.
Prince Jean d'Eath 1600 A.D.
Noble Jean d'Eath 1640 A.D.

and the current best dates for a standard map are:
Code:
Deity WastinTime 1220 A.D.
Immortal shyuhe 1816 A.D.
Emperor Moonsinger 1540 A.D.
Monarch CliftonBazaar 1848 A.D.
Prince Ludwitch 1660 A.D.
Noble Darkness 1560 A.D.

Good luck!

Results:

Ozbenno won on a standard map on Immortal in 1700 A.D.
Bindamel won on a standard map on Monarch in 1760 A.D.
bestje won on a standard map on Monarch in 1856 A.D.

It ain't so!

You haven't done Domination yet, so I was hoping for that. ;)

Got all of these for my Monarch EQM but as I said last UN, can't resist these as you can knock it over in an hour easy.

Don't research Gunpowder, as your GSs will want to lightbulb Chemistry instead of Electricity and Physics. Remember to save a GA if you get one, as that will lightbulb Radio or Mass Media.

shyuhe stole my #1 in this condition at Immortal/standard/quick, I should try and return the favour and go for Immortal/standard

wasn't domination round 1? with rome?

i think i'll stick to monarch difficulty for this one, 1848 looks like an achievable target
even when your plan is to bulb your way to MM, do you still use any of your GSs for academies?

Yep. There is a big gap in my schedule between the first two dominations; I hadn't noticed that. The next one is round 13!

Always subject to change of course, if I decide to move things around. My next round has the same victory condition, game speed, and civilization as G-minor 42. I think Denniz has secretly gotten a copy of my list somewhere.

Well just knocked off a 1700AD win on Immortal/Standard in a couple of hours while watching the cricket.

Tried a couple of different tactics in the game. Usually on Vanilla I would Oracle CS but decided to go straight for Literature and build Great Library, then research CS by hand and straight to Liberalism (took Sci Method). Made a couple of bonehead mistakes (merged 2nd GS instead of bulbing Philosophy) and didn't have much production out of my city.

@bestje - first GS is an Academy, then bulb all the rest.

have my first attempt in, sorry no screenshot this time as i'm going to try again as 1940 is pretty slow
was playing OCC and frankly having a bad day
had a real job winning the vote though had to sign a PA with the biggest civ and initiate a dogpile to get enough votes

@ozbenno: out of interest how are you getting all the AIs to definitely vote for you?
other than the usual giving in to demands gifts the turn before the vote etc

I also like your style with the military, i had monty next to me so had to keep a decent size army

I make sure I trade like crazy with the AI the whole game. This should ensure +4 trading and +1 you shared your discoveries, give into every tech demand no matter how much it hurts. I try to have a resource trade with every AI (didn't manage it this game though), trade away happy resources after Globe is in. All of this plus open borders, should give you close to +10 with every AI.

The real trick to getting he AI to vote for you is picking the right AI. The ones selected are the most peaceful ones which helps but Fred, Washington, Rossey and Asoka all have Universal Sufferage as their favoutite tech. Lizzie is Free Religion and Mansu Free Market. I adopt these civics asap and gift/trade the relevant techs to the AI and bribe them into adopting the civic.

Who was playing? I have UN, but don't have Greece. I also don't have quick ... might play this game (break my habit of only playing Bindy's even number games) but play it as QUICK.

Who was playing?

It was Indian Premier League, so couldn't tell you the teams but Rick Ponting was on one of them and Matty Hayden on the other.

IIRC, Game 3 was Monty UN quick.

so second time lucky and with the target of 1848 in mind....
BR2EQM7.jpg
yes about 3 turns too slow, might try again but it will be diplomination, that will teach the AI a lesson for constantly asking me for stuff...

thanks to Oz for the tips, congrats on getting your EQM as well
I was rather foolishly assuming the favourite civics were the same as they were in bts and they are almost all different... so US was definitely better than rep.

is there a guide out there for warlords and vanilla like Anion's one for bts?

@ozbenno: sounds good, will have a go on a higher difficulty, might play with a different leader though as I already have 3 games submitted that are eligible for round 7

Funny story.

I finished a small map with a pretty poor date, and shelved it while I worked on a standard map. Several days ago, I submitted the small because I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish the standard map game. I look today, and notice I had an email telling me I had submitted the wrong starting save for my small map victory

On the plus side, I finished and submitted a better result with my standard map, and managed somehow to get it in under the wire (and get a top spot besides! )

I usually show an early shot of my capital, but I seem to have forgotten to take one. Here's a much later shot of my capital, without resource markers. (Pigs, two gems, and dyes)

This was a relatively smooth and painless game. I rolled over Toku, and settled in. I got a Defensive Pact with Cyrus around turn 190, and a PA with him around turn 240 or so. When the first vote for victory came up, I thought I was a shoe in:

firstvoteresult.jpg

Gandhi didn't vote for me :(

Pacifist, Smashy-fist. I should taken him out somewhere along the way. I assume Gandhi wasn't happy enough with Cyrus? Anyway, I figured Gandhi's favorite civic would help, so I went for Democracy. The turn it came in, before I could even convert to US, the next vote came up:

win1760.jpg

How odd.

Not going to complain about a 1760 victory, that's for sure.

@ozbenno: thanks! now to get up and off settler level

also thanks to Bindy for organising the road

trade away happy resources after Globe is in.
I guess that is general tips and not spec. for this game. I couldn't open the save file since they were played with HOF-1.74.002 (i only have .003). But from image it looks like you played with only one city (it requires 5 theater to build Globe).

Then you going for a diplomatic vivtory (Rel or UN) do you usually only build one city?

This was occ which means you only need one theater to build globe, one university to build oxford etc... You can also build all the nat wonders you want(or limited to 5 in bts).
