Hello again!

As I mentioned in this thread, I have devised a plan to achieve all the requirements for four of the six legs of the Elite Quattromaster Challenge.

I will try to post a thread around every two weeks with the game conditions, and then some highlights of my game, and encourage others to do the same. I also open the floor to discussions of strategy, as the regular HoF'ers never cease to amaze me with their insights into the game.

Round 9: You've probably played this before!

As an odd numbered round, we're back to vanilla (+Warlords), and this is about as vanilla as it gets. We have:

England, whch means Liz, a very commonly played leader because of her traits (Fin/Phi);
Epic Speed, one of the more commonly played speeds;
Pangea, a desirable map type, although more common for conquest and domination.

"Required" Settings:
Expansion: Vanilla/Warlords
Era: Ancient
Civilization: England
Victory Condition: Space Race
Game Speed: Epic
Map: Pangea

Although all maps except duel are eligible for EQM, all the submissions for the Bindy challengeeveryone's submissions except Ruff's so far have been small or standard, so I’m going to concentrate on those two. If you’d like to try on another map size, it’s perfectly valid.

Epic Space Race: Rex, Kill, Outtech, Build, Launch. Basic Civ IV, really.

Here again are the opponent requirements for various map sizes.
Code:
Mapsize Minimum Maximum
  Tiny 2 4
 Small 4 7
Standard 6 10
 Large 8 14
  Huge 10 17
Remember, Duel Maps are definitely ineligible for the Elite Quattromaster Challenge.

Elizabeth is Philosophical and Financial. Victoria (yes, there is another English leader!) is Expansive and Financial. For Warlords players, Imperialistic replaces Expansive for Vicki. Warlords players also have Churchill, who is Charismatic and Protective. Of these, Phi/Fin is the obvious choice, but Expansive can have its benefits in the later game, when you start needing Factories/Coal Plants/Laboratories to build your space parts. The UU is the famous Redcoat, a strength 14 Rifleman. Warlords players also have the UU, which is the Stock Market, which is a bank with an extra 15% :gold:

England starts with Fishing and Mining.

If you're interested, the current best dates for a small map are:
Code:
Deity FiveAces 1619 A.D.
Immortal obe 1874 A.D.
Emperor Jean d'Eath 1849 A.D.
Monarch No entry!
Prince Truckasaurus 1913 A.D.
Noble chunga_changa__ 1679 A.D.
Warlord Lord Orpon 1873 A.D.
Chieftain BLubmuz 1538 A.D.
Settler Hindi 1541 A.D.

and the current best dates for a standard map are:
Code:
Deity ozbenno 1813 A.D.
Immortal kovacsflo 1613 A.D.
Emperor playshogi 1854 A.D.
Monarch AAA 1535 A.D.
Prince Gosha190 1649 A.D.
Noble Jack Leagle 1802 A.D.
Warlord DeafDolphin 1877 A.D.
Chieftain Hindi 1670 A.D.
Settler Hindi 1520 A.D.

Results:

Bindamel won in 1902 A.D. on Monarch Standard map
bestje won in 1893 A.D. on Monarch Small map

Space Race is one of my favorite victory conditions. I'll use these settings and give it a try at Immortal level - this and Deity are the only missing games for me to become a V/W QM. Not sure I'm ready for the challenge, though.

Monarch No entry!
I also have all of these boxes checked. However, the above item does provide some pull. I might play this with a slightly different leader and map (I hate global highlands so playing that as an OCC will mean the AIs have to deal with the map) with PA and OCC checked ! Oh and BtS too. I don't have India checked so it will be a Gandhi for me.

So, basically, nothing like Bindy #9 at all :D.

Edit: Duh - cannot be BtS and space race. Will have to be warlords and Gandhi as Vanilla Gandhi is Industrious & Spiritual while Warlords' Ghandi is Philosophical & Spiritual'

I'm in its another game for monarch EQM. I appear not to even have England at prince, how did that happen  especially with me being English and all :crazyeye:

I think I submitted a tiny map for round 1, just so ruff doesn't feel singled out :D

That monarch slot with no entry now has one hooray!

managed a (very) late 1800s win played on a small map and Liz was very glad to leave Monty, Sal, Asoka and Mansa behind. Though in about 1600 we offered Mansa a place on the space ship (via a PA) but he didn't want to come, apparently he was doing fine by himself .

Few points about the game, had quite a nice bit of land I (almost) managed to seal off and fill up by myself. I also managed to steal Monty's worker early on and he never really recovered (Asoka and Sal killed him towards the end)
I flipped the city he settled next to my capital but the one Asoka settled on my land founded a religion so it never flipped despite being reduced to about 5 tiles by the end.... not that it would have been much use, it would just have made the map look less messy

Won't make any claims of playing particularly well but I'm happy with a decent finish date

finally got that space victory (1893), stayed well away from the dom limit this time.

Okay, first things first:

B*st*rd. :D

I have no early pictures of this start, I have no idea why. I'm sure London was wonderful, but in the end, my bestest cities were Delhi and Bombay.

I like having Gandhi in my games, he gives me nice things.

And he never asks for them back:

Okay, so I founded three cities, took 5 of Gandhi's, one of which I lost culturally to Cyrus.

Liberalism in 1412:

Not too shabby.

Lately I've been on a kick of not starting Apollo until after Aluminum is in. This time I built it before I even had a factory up!

Gandhi had one more gift for me later:

Research finished point, I always enjoy looking at the list of techs you don't need to go to Alpha Centauri.

And a late GE, which I was able to turn into a late golden age (with an artist, I think), but not enough to best bestje:

unlucky, think it was my turn though, after you got the better date in the last couple.

it was very close, I think me managing to get aluminium in a trade from Mansa was what made the difference. otherwise I would have been a lot slower

what do you do with the slider once you have all the required techs?
I just left it to science for the score bonuses

100% :culture:

Easy choice, as I'd already had one city culture flipped by Cyrus, and I didn't want to lose any critical tiles in my production cities.

fair enough.
Is round 10 underway already? and is the map global highlands or normal highlands?

When I first read that, I couldn't figure out what you meant. I fixed my sig; it will be Global Highlands. Round 10 isn't officially underway yet, but I'm so bad about updating my sig, I figured I'd get it in my sig (with a link that doesn't go anywhere yet).

My internet is back on so I will give the Ethiopians a whirl. Rasta culture FTW!

lol, looks like we get an early start on round 10 then

you might want to mention the bug on global highlands maps, where it tells you that balanced resources are enabled and that the game is ineligible for submission. there shouldn't be a problem with the actual submission though but its worrying when you don't know about it

1 turn, ouch.
well done though Ruff

EDIT: I still got the higher score as a nice consolation prize
