According to the 5/4 definition, a binge drinker is a man who consumes at least five alcoholic drinks in under four hours

I can see how the British definition of being smashed for 2 days straight can be dangerous/ but, the American 5/4 definition that the media uses is a normal thing for most people right?

How is that binge drinking?
I am pretty sure I could drive at that rate. ( I'll admit I am a very big guy but, still ....)

Five beers in a time period of four hours is nothing. You'd barely be buzzed if buzzed at all.

5 drinks in a period of 4 minutes is something though. or maybe british just have a low tolerance for the stuff (probably just the english heh)

I once took 4 double vodkas over the course of an hour. Felt fine, could still juggle 5 balls.

and that definition comes from...?

Cos to me, binge drinking is when you puke at the end, period.

Ye old wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binge_drinking

Personally I would rate it at least 3X higher from 1.25 drinks an hour to like 3.75 .... because by 4 or 5 hours of that you are probably gonna be out.

The way the media drums it up is like 80% of college students binge etc etc .... that is a regular night of dinner party drinking!

The reason it is called binge drinking is because if you drink less than 5 beers you may be drinking it just because you like beer or the taste of alcohol, or perhaps sampling wine. When you go beyond the the threshold of 5 drinks you are drinking in order to get drunk on purpose. It has nothing to do with getting f-ed up or throwing up, just a terminology.

I suppose but, I think most people intend to get drunk when they drink in general - A full on binge sounds more like a drinking contest or trying to boot later on purpose. ..... drinking like crazy because you are depressed or something like that.

I, for example, might order a beer at a restaurant, with my food, just because beer tastes good to me (This is not the case for me personally, but for some, it is). However, you would rarely see someone order beer after beer with their steak - like you usually wouldn't see someone buy a lot of coca-colas - since drinking anything in a large amount usually has nothing to do with the drink itself - but rather the effects the drink will give you.

The reason many people have trouble understanding this is because the word "binge" often has connotations of beerkegs, teenagers going wild, crazy parties, etc.

To tell you the truth, rarely, outside of anti-alcoholic literature is this term used in its true meaning. Most of time people just use it to mean getting f-ed up.

Makes sense. I just wish they wouldn't drum it up like that in the media.

USians are just not the drinkers that Europeans are. For instance, look at the drinking ages.

Personally, if I have more than 5 drinks, in a day, I am going to feel like crap the next day. Multiple drinking days in-a-row has been out of the question for years. I guess I'm just getting old.

It's okay *pats back* my dad is old too. ;)

Today, that would probably get me drunk. Back when I had some tolerance, that many drinks in an hour wouldn't have phased me.

Don't binge drink kids, it's a money sink. The biggest thing I ever regret in life was my drinking days.

Doesn't binge drinking imply drinking over a period of several days, not hours?

Binge drinking, at least by the definition I remember from RA training, was drinking with the expressed purpose of getting drunk. It has nothing to do with being an alcohol, or going on some kind of bender.

5 drinks over 4 hours probably won't get you pissed at the best of times, but body chemistry is a tricky thing and can be affected by a lot of things (fatigue, dehydration, how much you've eaten, etc). The rule that I follow is that if I have to drive or anything that requires a clear mind and motor skills, I limit myself to one standard drink (one pint of beer, one glass one wine, one ounce of liquor) per hour....

Prediction: this thread will quickyl turn into a 'I once drank this much and didn't get drunk' contest....reminds me of my undergrad

I just drove home from a bar at that rate, actually. And I truly doubt that I'd've blown a .08.

When you are in your teens and 20s this is true but as you get older it is less so. As time goes on your hangovers get worse and worse to the point where getting wasted doesn't seem worth it. Personally I like the taste of beer and wine and I have nothing against a little mellow buzz but being trashed and acting like an idiot is no longer something I am into. I drink almost every day, but I only get drunk maybe four or five times a year now.
