Report: Chinese man dies of bird flu
http://www.cnn.com/2011/12/31/world/asia/china-bird-flu/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

(CNN) -- A 39-year-old man in southern China died Saturday from what appears to be a contagious strain of avian flu, state media reported Saturday.

The man -- identified by Xinhua as a bus driver with the surname Chen -- was hospitalized in Shenzhen on December 21 as he battled a fever. He tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus, the provincial health department said in a statement, according to the official news agency.

According to the story, he hadn't had any contact with birds in the prior month before his death, which raises the question of whether or not his death is the only one from this strain.

I hope that we're not going to have another frenzy of panic over this, but I can see it coming already.

Hopefully it will not develop to a pandemic level, like the last bout. Were in the middle of flu season now.

It never went away, so the title is a bit misleading.

If this happened in the Netherlands, I'd be more concerned to be honest :mischief:

An official statement has come in from the leadership of Madagascar: "SHUT. DOWN. EVERYTHING."

Is this the same strain that was genetically engineered into existence that made the news in the past couple weeks?

An official statement has come in from the leadership of NickyJ's Computer: "SHUT. UP. EVERYONE."

But really, after the last bird flu panic attack, as well as 'grab your gas masks cause swine flu is gonna destroy 197% of the earth's population', I've really had enough of this. Wake me up when it's actually significant, rather than pulling the typical Chicken Little routine.

"In other news, a 97-year-old man in the U.S. died Thursday from what appears to be a contagious strain of old age. WHO suggests that everybody acquire gas masks because the pandemic is killing thousands every day."

It would be fun if 2012 started off with a civilization-ending pandemic - I'd be annoyed by all those idiots who would claim it was the Mayan prophecy come true though.

@NickyJ: You say that now, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In other words, don't wait until it's too late.

Oh God, next thing you know, everyone and their mothers are going to warn us about the 'avian menace' and the 'flying terror'. That kind of scare-mongering is absurd, I had the swine flu, and I lived.

I think most people can reasonably prepare without having a bunch people screaming that we're all going to die.

How dare you oppose the braniacs who say we're all going to die!

Oh definitely. I don't buy into mass hysteria either, but I'd prefer it if people weren't so dismissive to potential threats either. ;)

I don't think a single scientist said that we were all going to die, more likely is that they said that it might become dangerous.

More likely it was jounralists who said that scientists said that we were all going to die.

Also, making sure that you take some extra precautions in flu season is good advice no matter how you cut it. If not to you then to those without the immune system to fight off infection.

Is this a reference to Pandemic 2?

I am pretty sure I got a case when it was around, or I just got a bad strain of the flu when it happened since I got quite sick and nearly had to go to hospital had it got ny worse, but thankfully all it meant was that I was sick for 2 weeks.

I might fall down the stairs and kill myself. RED ALERT! RED ALERT! SPREADING PANDEMIC OF PEOPLE FALLING DOWN STAIRS! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!

I want to hear about it before I get it, thanks.
There's a difference between hearing about it and everybody panicking because some guy in China died. When there are actually some major fatalities, or it's spreading towards our area, I'll care, but when one guy in China dies of flu..... meh. Sorry, but it isn't something worth going wild about in an area as far away from there as we are.

Ya, that would be a bit discontenting.

This is the last thing the media need, another excuse to terrorize simple people with exaggerated dangers and panic them with non-existent crises.
