Black Screen on 1920x1080 Fullscreen

I have a odd problem. If the last settings for Civ (BTS) were 1920x1080 resolution, fullscreen, when I load the program it will go to a black screen (after the 'initializing xml, etc' progress bar). No intro video, no menu, nothing. This is the same resolution as my desktop, and is my monitor's native resolution.

This problem will not happen if the resolution is set lower, or if it is not set to full screen.

I can load it with a lower resolution, fullscreen, and while in game change it to 1920x1080, and everything will work fine - until the next time I start the program.

Any ideas as to what could cause this?

Some specs:
Vista 64, ATI 4870, Catalyst 8.12, 4G RAM

Is the game patched to date?

I've attached the dxdiag results, and I do have the latest patch for BTS. I have found one way to fix this: If I change the civ ini file to force a custom resolution of 1920x1080, it works fine. If I choose 1920x1080 from the resolution list in game, then it will not. But, as it is, I don't anticipate needing to change resolutions, so the fix will work for me. If you know why it happens though, I'd love to know.

unfortunately I do not know - I have to force my resolution in the .ini as well since the game actually freezes when I try to use the options menu

your specs are quite fine for the game so it should run smoothly - though some graphics cards (even powerful ones) seem to have some trouble with this game... Glad it works
