If you, like me, are paranoid about the intrusive Steam software that is bundled with Civ 5, I suggest you start Steam in offline mode, and then for total peace of mind, go to windows firewall, inbound traffics, and change all the rules regarding Steam and Civ 5 to blocked.

Key word, folks.

If you are more realistic and prudent, you simply wouldn't buy Civ V and stop rewarding 3rd party app being forced on you. If you don't like the way you are treated as a customer, why reward the business doing stuff to you that you don't like?

I don't know why anyone else find it acceptable for Steam to pop up ads for other games on your desktop. I bought a game to play, I did not pay for ads. FFS if they want to feed me ads they should pay me, not the other way around.

Indeed. And how about a way to turn off the message about the steam community that pops up whenever you open a game? Steam seems to want to show itself at every moment possible.

Yes how about that option to turn popups off?
And why don't the people use it if they don't like the popups?

Edit:
PS. Steam->Settings->Interface->Turn off "Notify me about blahblahblah"

How is Steam "intrusive?"

What kind of paranoia do you suffer from? I mean, what exactly are you scared of? Do you think they are spying on you or something? You think they might steal your identity, maybe?

Imagine Steam as a TV cable provider, but instead of accessing all your tv channels through them you access your games.

I did. It still pops up "press something-tab to access the steam community" whenever I start a game.

EDIT: I think I finally found that one.

Just remember that you will need to disable those rules in order to patch the game or play multi-player.

I will never understand why so many people never check the options menu and go on and on complaining about things that can be changed/turned off.

As said, you can turn off the notifications in the options. This includes the window informing you of new releases and sales that appears when you start steam.

I've been on Steam for a year or so and don't mind the sales and other game info that pop up.

I've bought several other games and learned about a bunch of interesting FREE ones as well.

Honestly, Steam DRM is the most unobtrusive as it gets and keeps piracy down. It's a win-win as far as I can tell.

I don't mind them either.

I had them turned off, but after missing a few very nice sales I turned them back on again (and got a few nice sales which I'd otherwise have missed).

Although I can imagine that people would find it annoying.

This thread should be locked for the OP's sheer stupidity. Steam is intrusive? Please. It's a remarkably convenient way to keep all your game purchases in one place and have access to them at any time from any computer. It doesn't force you to start it up when your computer starts. It really doesn't force ads upon you (as long as you turn it off, of course then you'll miss the sales). What is intrusive about it?

Hell, if you just put an icon of the Steam-attached game on your desktop, just double-click it and it'll start Steam and leave it in the background.

There are a lot of DRM schemes that truly suck -- I'm looking at you, Ubisoft -- but Steam is not one of them. It's like refusing to buy a 360 because you have to turn it on before you insert your Halo disc.

Hello, since so much steam has been released whilst talking about Steam, may be you guys can advice me on weather or not to buy the game directly from steam instead of ordering a DVD and then connect to steam for activation?

Is it an easy process?
