TL;DW (AI Generated)
  • Engaging Gameplay: Civ 7 stands out as the best vanilla Civ release, delivering immersive 4X gameplay with a captivating "one more turn" allure.
  • Innovative Systems: New features, such as the influence system and army commanders, enhance the game but necessitate strategic adaptations.
  • Visual Appeal: The game's graphics are impressive; however, performance issues, particularly in the late game, need to be addressed.
  • Missing Features: Several critical features (e.g., city renaming and a search function) and UI/UX concerns detract from the overall experience.
  • AI Improvements: Although the AI shows progress, it still exhibits questionable decision-making, particularly in terms of forward settling and army commander utilization.
  • Pacing Challenges: Age transitions and the catch-up mechanic introduce pacing issues, which could be mitigated by incorporating age-specific victory conditions or a classic mode.
  • Overall Enjoyment: While Civ 7 is enjoyable, it needs significant enhancements to realize its full potential as an exceptional Civ game

The "complains list" that start the "Bad of Civ 7" part are very disappointing and quite surprising. Being only able to go up on the queue, the science cost of the tech not being available anywhere, limited trade, no "restart game" button, no city liberation... it feels like relatively minor grievances that should be easily patched, but also things that should have been seen during playtests way earlier. (Not being able to rename cities doesn't really bother me, but I think it was already a complain of players when Civ VI got released so it's surprising it's not in the base game).
The UI issues seem pretty bad too but at least those I can imagine are hard to fix and any tweak can lead to new issues, but being able to move something down the queue or a restart game button shouldn't be as hard to add.

IMO, the best review so far among all the released ones. Informative without being overbearing, with concrete examples to back up all the claims, both good and bad. It’s long, but I think something that CFC members can digest just fine.

Looks like UI (both aesthetics and functionality) is going to be death by a thousand cuts at launch, and it’s getting increasingly annoying that of all systems and mechanics, this is one that keeps getting reset, with minimum past improvements carried over.

This feels like the most helpful review so far. No sensationalism, even handed. Criticisms feel fair, and looking forward to seeing how much my actual opinions align after I play for real.

Subscribed to his channel after this and the other videos he's been done. Reccomend giving this one a watch if you're on the fence (but if that's true you might be on the wrong forum)...

Good video

Some things I noted that I think need to be addressed asap but good thing is they can or should be able to fairly easily
- towards end of exploration the game performance starts to go down with some choppiness and turns getting quite long (he’s playing with a 4080 super which is a very high end card) - clearly optimisation is needed
- UI / civilopedia is clearly unfinished as I think just about every reviewer at this point has complained about that.

I imagine that the issue is less a gpu issue and more a cpu issue, tbh. Doesn’t make it much better cause he has a pretty beefy cpu, but still an important distinction

Best review I've seen, I think, got a subscribe. You can tell how much he likes it fundamentally, but the criticisms were all valid, clearly presented, and constructive. I sincerely hope the devs listen carefully and take it seriously, so many things should be easy fixes.

Fully agree.

Long, but still felt like not much repetition. Interesting details (map types I would hoped even more) etc.

"One Step Forward, Two Steps Backwards"
Much like the release versions of V and VI. That's why I have hope that most of the flaws will be remedied in a year or two.
