I've been playing Catherine / Russia up until now, mainly because I don't want to play Bony the Frog. But the advantages f France over Russia are becoming obvious:

1) No need to build a monument quickly
2) No need for a Krepost
3a) Faster Land expansion - monument + krepost will expand as fast as a french monument alone, and produces half as much culture.
3b) Less money spent on buying useful tiles
4) More Social Policies. Many, many more. Even if I do save up until Patronage unlocks.
5) I can build Stonehenge for the cost of a Krepost and a Monument.

I like Russia's bonus, but there is no way to predict how useful it will be. You never know how many Horses and Iron you will be able to grab, after all.

Anyone else found their first choice of a civ doesn't live up to expectations?

I expected the Roman combination of Classical units to be much more powerful than it is. Food isn't scarce due to maritime city-states, all of your Scientists stack towards acquiring a GS, and you can rip through the early techs with full Libraries.

This allows you to tech bomb your way up to quality guns absurdly early, which makes early UUs pointless.
